'Clean it all, it must be cleaned!' - But why?

The destruction of the Island of Mata Nui was a plot point I always had very strong feelings about. Initially, I hated it, because my favourite island in the whole Bionicle Universe was gone. However, I’ve grown to appreciate the bittersweet nature of this plot twist since then. However, there’s still one thing I don’t really understand - Why exactly did the Island’s geographical features need to be destroyed by the Bohrok? I know, it had to be returned to its original state from the time before time, but from the practical standpoint…? Great Spirit Robot is a fifty-million-foot-tall iron giant, we’ve already established that he can easily penetrate a huge landmass with just his head… But a bunch of jungles and mountains suddenly make it impossible for him…? Maybe I missed something in the story, but I just don’t get it.
