Emergence

There is a world where the ground is nothing but metal, and the sky was black. This world was small, with no trees or clouds or stars, no light or living things. All that lived in this world were the Mist People. The Mist People came in many shapes, and some were foggier than others. They wandered around the small world, carefree. They didn’t feel happy, but they weren’t sad. Maybe, they didn’t feel anything.

At some point, one Mist Person looked at the small world, then looked above them somehow. He wondered why the sky was black and endless while the metal ground was white and solid. He then became curious, something the Mist People have yet to feel, if they felt anything. He decided to float as far away from the world as possibly, out to the black sky. However, there was something that pushed him. He tried again, and again, he was stopped.

“Let me through,” he says into the darkness, “I want to see how far I can go.”

Nothing andwered him. Angry, he flew with all his might into the darkness, and the sky cracked. A beam of light shined through the hole the Mist Person made. The Mist People were amazed. They had never seen something so bright.

“Look there!” they said, “Something is striking the world!” The beam had reached the metal ground. It then bent, and made a circle on the dark sky. “Look there! A strange disc on the sky!”

The Mist Person who cracked the sky caught the others’ attention. He was named First Light for his deed. The Mist People peeked through where the light was shining. The light didn’t burn their eyes, they were mist. They saw that there was another sky, at that the dark sky was merely a dome. The Mist People were so preoccupied with the sight, they didn’t notice that their own world was getting hotter and hotter. So, fire erupted, and their sky turned red. The Mist People panicked, but First Light made the crack bigger for them to escape. After everyone had gone out, the crack glowed red. The Mist People looked back and saw red liquid covering their once black sky. Relieved that they escaped, they explored their new world.

In this world, the ground was made of purple dust and blue grass, and the sky was orange, probably from the light the red liquid had shined. Here, the Mist People found many new things. Some Mist People found hairs growing off of the trees of the new, blue world, and started to take a new shape. They became all kinds of hairy beasts. Some were wolves, others were cats, and still others were sheep and antelope. They became many things. Some of them found more interesting things. The dead bark became bone, which made horns and claws and antlers. Some found odd stones and even tinier grass hairs, which became tough outer skin and antennae. Others found hairy leaves, which became feathers. Soon, the Mist People took many strange, new forms. Some, however, stayed in the sky, afraid of the new world. Their mist became tougher and dustier, making clouds in the sky. They floated over the others, still afraid.

And what about First Light? First Light still had his curiousity, despite being a wolf. However, First Light found another new thing. A large pool of blue liquid was laying above the ground. He touched it, and it felt runnier than the liquid that covered the old sky. It was water. First Light decided to jump in, as the water was nice and cool. When he got out, his fur had been colored blue. The others started to giggle, especially the wolves. A blue wolf, how ridiculous does he look.

First Light, however, didn’t mind, and laughed with them. However, there wasn’t much food or warmth in this world. Soon, the Animal People and Insect People and Bird People, even the Cloud People, became unhappy.

First Light decided to see what he could find, wandering the blue world. He then found a tall vine that reached the orange sky. He brought the others to watch, all the animals and insects and birds, as he climbed up and realized the sky was still a dome. He hits it over and over until it cracked, revealing another world. He entered, finding the world covered in white grass and trees and the sky was dark, like the first. However, he found something wonderful: a strange berry . . . a ton of strange berries. They grew on bushes and trees, everywhere. The others climbed up when First Light told them, and soon, the second world was abandoned.

The Animal People, the Insect People, the Bird People, and the Cloud People flooded into this world. They found that water existed here, too, and ate and drank with delight. First Light indulged in the berries most of all. Although the world was dark, small crystals on the ground and under it lit up the place. The people gathered these crystals, making crystal torches for many foraging paths and ways to bodies of water.

First Light then saw strange creatures in the water. They spiraled and swam through it with ease, with scales and fins and gills. They were the Fish People. First Light befriended a few and brought them berries as gifts.

“Thank you,” they said, “These berries looked tasty, but they were far away from us, and we couldn’t get any.”

However, as time went on, the berries got more and more scarce. None of the peoples thought to grow more, and soon, there were little berries for everyone. All peoples got very unhappy, and started to war with each other for the berries. This brought new, terrifying things, and First Light was saddened, and decided to look around the world again. He found another vine, which led up to the dome of the white world. Again, he broke through, afraid of the fighting that had broken out. Others who felt the same followed him, and they soon emerged into a most unusual world. It was too dark to see, but First Light and the others had no choice. All kinds of People flooded into this world, and those who warred eventually destroyed each other, leaving the white world empty.

First Light and the other People agreed not to fight, but aware that there may not be much food in this world, they set an order. Animals great in number would offer themselves as food to those who need it to survive. The new world was strange, and the People split up. Soon, the worlds they knew only existed in First Light’s stories.

Over time, they started to change. Their minds were being molded. This new world was different, somehow. Even First Light forgot his name when he tripped and fell on his head. When he woke up, his fur was all dusty from the dirt and sand. Something about this world, some mystical air, had changed them. Once in a while, some of them would return to where they came from. A large crack in the ground, a canyon. They’d feel familiar, then go about their lives, none the wiser.
