It’s also important to remember that plot elements like the GSR and the GBs were planned out as early as 1999; with that in mind, it’s very likely that the EP was explained poorly due to limitations in media (limited internet content and comics as the only media) rather than lazy storytelling. You couldn’t embed twenty 1.5 minute - long animations like the ones that we got in 2015 on a site back in 2002.
Nah, EP was just a really uncertain concept until around 04-05. Initially there was the concept for just one ‘biodermis’ material that was mined for constructing rahi/creatures (that’s why whenua calls it the ‘stuff of life’ in mnog), but before that could be deployed it got shifted to protodermis, which was still mined, but for nebulous reasons. Then suddenly it got transformative properties in 02, a concept that held for 03, and then in 04 I guess they figured everything inside mata nui should really be protodermis and we got the protodermis sea and liquid protodermis and molten protodermis and all that stuff, so it became necessary to distinguish the original protodermis as ‘energized’ to explain why not everyone transformed when they ran into it.

It’s lack of substance really shows when dedicated fans of the franchise have nothing to talk about a year after the release of the main story medium, but still discuss a 17 year old click and point game
