Umarak The Scorched (And Ice Shadow Trap)

Story

In an alternate timeline, the Toa were all trapped in the Shadow Realm, and Makuta freed to conquer Okoto. However, Ekimu was able to enact a last-ditch effort, forcing a fresh-forged mask of Fire and Shadow onto Umarak The Destroyer, burning away Makuta’s corruption and reverting him most of the way back to his original form. Umarak escaped while Ekimu was left to Makuta’s mercy, but heard the wise Mask-Maker’s final words - “Remember, this island is your home, too.”

Later reuniting with the Protectors and the Creatures on the run from Makuta’s armies, he offered to assist them, if they could promise him one thing in return - “I want to see Makuta’s head… on a pike.” Their alliance is a strange and uncomfortable one; Umarak is still evil and still wishes to control the elemental Creatures, but has reluctantly set those ambitions aside for the time being… at least, until such time as Makuta has been defeated.

Umarak Himself

For this version of Umarak, I used almost exclusively pieces left over from the extra sets I purchased to build JTO Makuta. The only ‘extra’ bits were the mask from Ekimu’s set, and the toe-talons borrowed from Makuta himself.

That piece limitation turned out to be a positive thing, however. Without the orange skeleton torso plate on hand, I instead resorted to using a purple one from the extra Onua Uniter. The use of the Trans-purple for the shells and Trans-orange for smaller, internal pieces, I feel gives him a subtler look, more burnt than burning. Similarly, I had to make his antlers uneven, but hopefully it serves to show the sort of state he’s in.

A back shot. His torso build is somewhat simpler than on the Hunter, due to lack of the proper connecting pieces for his Shadow Trap shoulderpads, and I moved his shoulder joints further up. Hopefully the Skull Raider clipons comphensate for that, somewhat.

Instead, I put two of the three remaining Shadow Trap halves to use as the missing Ice Shadow Trap, with Melum’s claws as the legs.

While the other hand reverted to normal, this one didn’t make it all the way, retaining some of the bulky claw form of the Destroyer. Umarak hates it as a reminder of his forced servitude, but he has to admit it makes for an effective built-in weapon when all other options fail.

I gave him a heartlight.

Detail on the lower legs. Since I lacked bone pieces for the thighs in the same length as in Umarak the Hunter, I instead gave him the longer angled brackets for his shins, like on the Destroyer. Built it all up a bit more, but it isn’t that complex when you break it down.

Accessories

As has become a pattern for many more recent MOCs of mine (that will be posted sooner or later) I maybe overdid it a little with the accessories. We have one crest piece using the last Shadow Trap half, two horn bits with a few different applications, his Charred Forest Bow, and Ekimu’s shield, sans the ornamental covering.

The horns and crest can go on his back, to help give him somewhat more of an intimidating and filled-in profile. That’s really all the crest is for, actually…

Though it also allows Ekimu’s shield to be stored away.

However, the horns can also be attached to his knuckes to form a Mantax-like pair of pincers.

And the shield can go onto his wrist. Together they make for quite an interesting set of weaponry…

With the crest removed, the bow can also store on his back, pegging into the lower part of the Uniter port.

But naturally, it looks better in use.

The thumb of his claw hand has to be fiddled with a bit for this, and it looks a bit strange. Thankfully the rest of the hand covers this up in most poses.

Uniting

As with his Hunter version, this Umarak can unite with the Creatures, just long enough to fend off Makuta’s forces. The Protectors are naturally uneasy about allowing this, and Umarak has struggled with the temptation to force the Creatures to stay with him, but ultimately both parties understand this particular fight is best saved for later.

This is so much better than the original, and that was a good set to begin with.

Well done! I’ve always wanted that mask recolor to convert my own Umarak, but lots of people have already done it much better than I ever could (and I can’t find a cheap Ekimu). Looks awesome!

I’m a big fan. I really like the subtlety of the mismatched antlers and hands
