I probably won’t be seeing this movie for a while, since I need to watch CA 2 first.

I did not click Potato’s spoiler. I did not go into the comics on Avengers posts or videos. I unliked all comic-related facebook pages. Then, some random jerk in the comments of a gaming video says he dies. No warning, no nothing. It was just there. I am very angry about this.

SPOILERS

I was really sad when Quicksilver died, I thought Vision was amazing, Ultron was a fantastic villain, but after he killed Quicksilver I was just like “yeah he needs to die”

I posted this in a PM, but for everyone else, my amateur critique of the movie:

I never really understood Ultron’s motives. First he wants order, or peace, or something. Then he wants to be the next step in evolution all of a sudden. Then when that fails, he gives up and decides to kill everyone on the planet. Best I can figure is that he’s decided by the end is that life is too chaotic an must be destroyed to preserve order…but he never really says anything to suggest that, as far as I recall, nor is the topic really dealt with at all. He also seemed to rely heavily on Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver; when they betrayed him, he seemed a lot less intimidating. That, combined with the fact that he didn’t have a clear motive, made the whole final battle lack tension–I just wanted it to end; I wasn’t very engaged by it.

As for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, I didn’t think they were handled all that well–they got almost no character development. What do we know bout them? They volunteered to be experimented on b/c of their war-torn background, they have fake Russian accents…and that’s about it. Good start, but what are their personalities like? We never really get to see that. When Quicksilver died, I didn’t really care because he was essentially just a walking plot device. Compare that to Agent Coulson in the first Iron Man–he doesn’t have a big part, but he’s a great character because we can tell that, behind his “just the facts, ma’am” exterior, he’s actually a very caring person. Heck, compare him to the version of him in Days of Future Past–he had so much more personality in that movie.

As an aside, I have similar problem with Vision not getting enough development. His first scene was great, but then he barely did anything, despite being built up as this huge game-changer.

With Hawkeye, I’m glad they gave him some development. I didn’t think was outstanding, because it was very cliché–has has a wife who is supportive but worried, and kids…just like a ton of other action heroes. With more time to flesh out the relationship between him and his wife and put some unique twist on it, it could have been much better. That brings me to my biggest overall criticism–there were just too many things going on, especially in terms of character sub-plots, and I didn’t think most of them were all that great. If they’d cut out a few, like, say, the random Hulk/Black Widow romance, there would have been more time to develop the other subplots better.

Compare it to the first movie. It had: 1. A threatening villain with a clear plan and motives, who upped the ante throughout the whole movie–the final battle has a lot of tension because a giant space army against six people is quite a daunting challenge, especially since they’ve never faced anything like that before. 2. A clear central plot and character–The Avengers try to stop Loki while Captain America struggles with his place in the world/purpose in life. 3. Just enough character scenes to show off the ensemble without getting cluttered. On all of those counts, AoU is a cluttered mess by comparison. It also feels like a movie that had to be made to set up Captain America 3, not something that can stand very well on its own.

Finally, I don’t want to be too negative. I did still enjoy the movie overall; I gave it a 7/10 on IMDb. Joss Whedon’s witty dialogue really shone, the chemistry between the returning characters was great, and, like all the Marvel movies, it did a good job of portraying its heroes as…well…actual heroes (as opposed to Man of Steel, where Superman doesn’t seem to care about civilian casualties). It was good, just not as great as the first one.
