BIONICLE Canon Contest #3: Honor Guard

Clutter. It’s entirely unnecessary.

It’s also wrong, because it was not implemented for those reasons. The consent solution was implemented as a compromise between MOCists and Artists and the impact they could have on each other. It was intended to allow each to potentially influence the end design without compromising the artistic integrity of either creator.

Further, I’ve grown quite tired with this incessant need to dictate and influence the decisions of voters the way this subliminally would. We have rules and guidelines to abide by canon and keep the contest as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. If you want people to consider these things, it’s your responsibility to make them aware of them, not ours.

This conversation is over. We’re done. We’re not adding that, we’re not changing it. If this continues any further, we will consider staff action.

Ok I see the confusion now. I was under the assumption the colour rules were implemented to allow artists to act upon the concern of those who would prefer some form of consistent colouring. That’s what it sounded like when Meso suggested the colour rule; and reading back over his message, he doesn’t explicitly say why the metallic colour consent rule was added, as far as I can tell. I will take partial blame here, but only partial. Please reflect on the fact that this whole debate could have been avoided if you and Meso had been clearer.

To be very explicit: my suggestions have in no way been intended to subtly influence voters that would have otherwise not cared about consistency. Rather, I wanted to give voters who do care about it ample ability to vote in that regard, and for entrants to be fully informed on the pros and cons of consenting to changes.

I maintain the addendum is useful (with the correct explanation of why the consent rules were added) but, well, I value my account too much to go on. Never thought I’d see the day when I’d be threatened with a ban for being unreasonable. I pride myself on being the opposite.

This has been quite tame, usually you don’t get banned because of an opinion despite how unreasonable the mod feels it to be, I talk from experience

I mean, if Eljay thought I was trying to rig the contests or waste everyone’s time with a weird brand of highbrow trolling, sure, I’d ban me too.

I see

…I said nothing about banning. This is how rumors start, guys.

Alright, since the contest has drifted in that direction, I’ll pose a question I’ve been meaning to ask anyways:

I’ve got a possible design for replacing the upper leg with a custom-built one and possibly the lower leg as well. Would a Hagah with custom limbs be frowned upon as un-Hagah-like, or would people be more willing to diverge their builds if I introduce a monopoly in the field? Because so far every entry is stock limbs slapped together and, while some have been quite impressive, nobody’s really experimenting with how detailed they can get.

So, thoughts? Custom limbs stacked to the brim with tiny details, or no? I promise I’d be able to make the rest of the model match the appearance and this wouldn’t be a sudden, jarring jump from simple to complex.

Do it. That’s the only kind of thing I’m voting for, aside from art.

You have a better chance of winning if you’re an outlier that some people dislike than just another MOC lost in the sea of clones that everyone likes.

You probably know my answer, but that’s no reason not to do it.

I think if a design with loads of complex assemblages of parts actually won, I’d just rebuild it to have a standard design. As long as the custom-built parts aren’t so distinct from Norik and Iruini that I can’t rationalise them away as simple creative liberties that aren’t absolutely canonical, I’m happy.

That’s honestly a pinch insulting that any cleverness in my design or compensation for the limitations in accepted turnout is simply creative liberties and not me working within an extremely confined public perception

Please don’t rationalize them away as anything aside from my specific, direct intent to have the moc appear a specific way with a specific construction. If that means you won’t vote for it, that’s fine.

Hm. Well, it wouldn’t hurt to try.

I’ll probably do Kualus simply because I have 1. a lot of pieces of that nature in white and 2. the fiercest competition and best builds in the Kualus category so far. No point in taking on a challenge if it isn’t challenging.

Apologies if this has been answered already (I haven’t looked through this topic much), but if an entry were to use stud.io simply for presentation, and the rest of the images for other angles, breakdown, etc, use a physical MOC to show it is buildable, would the io file still need to be attached?

Yeah, I wouldn’t vote for it unless I had no better options. When Perp made the Artakha artwork, since the MOC isn’t canon, I just pretended the CCBS parts were ‘unknown G1 / Technic pieces’. It’s just my coping mechanism - don’t take it personally.

I’d wait for Eljay to confirm, but when I did my (physical) Artakha MOC, some of my breakdown photos were in Lego Digital Designer and they said that was ok.

what

If the inclusion of specific pieces into Bionicle’s canon is requiring you to find a coping mechanism, maybe you should take a step back from the contests as a whole. That doesn’t sound necessarily healthy.

Or inspiring for your argument, either.

I mean, it’s not like I’m huddled in the corner of a padded room just because CCBS made its way into G1. I’d just prefer if it didn’t from an aesthetic POV.

Which argument? In regards to your MOC or the other stuff?

I expect there’s very few people that lie more towards the purist side of the spectrum than me (though I have been known to cut pieces, albeit with great trepidation :upside_down_face:). But I imagine some people will still prefer the Hagah to look as simple and set-accurate as Norik and Iruini.

Mostly my MOC, but it doesn’t much help your credibility in other departments.

You’ve been painting pieces for a long time and I’m preeeeeeeeetty sure most purists I know specifically don’t do that.

I’d like to see if any of the other people here watching this topic like a hawk would agree or no. Not sure if I should make a poll here since I don’t want it derailing discussion.

You may be surprised to discover that I agree with you. I’m fully aware that while many people seem to share my sentiment, none of them likely feel it as strongly as me. The spirit of some of my points were taken on board by others (and by TTV) though, so I know I’m not completely insane. :man_shrugging:

I’m more of a ‘canon purist’ - I won’t be particularly bothered if you make a Godzilla MOC with a billion little details, but if something is being put forth as canonical, it had better look like an official set. Paint, cut parts and 3D prints can all look official if done right.

Wouldn’t mind custom limbs but a prefab limb model may sway me more.

Probably has to say no to this one, I want my Hagah simple

I agree with what they said about that. The point of this contest is to create canon forms for the rest of an existing team. So it stands to reason that they should be of a consistent style to Iruini and Norik, just like we see with every group of six in Bionicle. Having these new designs veer away from what the existing two have kinda defeats the point in my opinion. Different weapons, limb types, and armor colors are common across all teams in the franchise, but there’s still a general cohesion that they keep among the team that should be kept in mind for stuff like this.

Also, apparently we can’t say “s h i f t” on here (had to use “veer”). Not sure what sort of bad language that’s supposed to be.

Probably because it looks similar to another word that’s the same but missing the ‘f’. Honestly, this board has one of the most stringent profanity filters I’ve ever seen.

By all means go for it! I agree that a large number entries are way too conservative (as expected). I myself tried to do some new things, but still had to restrain myself from steering too far from this “public perception”. But that was a strategic choice, not a choice of personal preference.
I would like to see a more intricate design, but I know it will be frowned upon. This is not only a problem in this specific contest, but I noticed it in these canon contests in general.
People are too scared of “too detailed custom stuff” for some reason. So by all means break the mold! :v:
