BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

So…I’m not saying I’m advocating for cat Lariska, I think it’s one of many paths for her with potential. But regarding all the people who are flat out against it:

You guys realize sets with an animal aesthetic aren’t new, right?

I mean, yes, if it’s a meme entry, I don’t want it. But cat lariska I definitely have no issue with at all.

On a different note, I was wondering…

How much would a Free-For-All affect the number of entries in the art portion of a contest? I feel like if people make art for the first part of a contest, they’ll be less inclined to do a separate one for the second. I don’t have the time to cross check entrants for the Hagah at the moment, but it’d be something interesting to look into.

Nitpick: Zesk and Vorox aresn’t really an “animal aesthetic”. They’re kinda just “animals”.

Interesting thought indeed.

Though I think that the GSB is the only other character that warrants a FFA.

I still believe that the Yesterday Quest Toa can work as a free-for-all with a group shot for the final canon image (thereby avoiding the uncertainty of the structure of the contests, since it won’t matter if art wins or not).

Kodiak’s Zaria and Doni’s Orde are great entries due to them being Krakua type of Custom. I’m still unsure about the Chiaras i have seen since there hasn’t been many physical builds that catch entirely my eye. There’s one that’s a 3D model that i quite like but cannot avoid thinking about the importance of a MOC made with real physical pieces instead of one made digitally.

I do realize that other sets have animal inspiration. However most of them are either mutated, transformed or Rahi but I digress.

What I dislike about lariskat is that it walks that fine line of being a meme while also being serious. Because it may have been entered in good faith but the memers can and will likely still rally behind it anyway, delegitimizing other equally serious entries.

And let’s be honest if a cat wins the art portion its going to be filled with equally or more border line entries.

I feel like it should be noted that Gelu had cat-like elements.

eh
I would be fine for having a cat like Lariska win, but not have it be so cat like that it’s a meme.

I want catgirl Lariska with cat ears please

This makes no sense.

  1. A group shot is unnecessary, as they have no mettalic armour to balance like the Hagah.
  2. A group shot makes no sense; they’re not a team. They worked together for three days. What would we even do with a GS? There’s no “the TYQ Toa” page on bs01.
  3. unlike the Hagah, their builds are unknown. The FFA method worked for the Hagah (known Metru builds) and it could work for the GSB (who would be difficult to build anyway), but for anyone else it’s pointless.

Anything can become or be part of a meme, it doesn’t negate its own merits.

Hoseryx became a meme, but that wasn’t the problem with it. The problem was the nature of the build.

Conversely a Lariska with cat-like features could likely fall into an existing meme, but still have enough merit by itself for that to not be an issue.

The pink Pouks I submitted walked that line. It also got lumped under the ‘thunder thighs’ meme, but the thighs weren’t so bulked up as to be an issue (and at least one other entry did have to change their thighs).

I would worry less about whether an entry is or isn’t a meme, and more whether a given entry (which may or may not have cat-like features) works. Besides, if something is excessively disruptive TTV have Rule 11, and haven’t been afraid to use it.

EDIT: Don’t get me wrong though, I have little patience for serious attempts to canonise something ‘for the lulz’.

Very true
Although i have to say that a LarisCat would definitely have my vote

I wouldn’t really compare a color to the meme potential of a female humanoid cat. The only thing wrong with pink pouks really was that there wasn’t a lego metallic pink. Thunder thighs was more in the meme ball park if we should compare them all and more to the level of what I’m expecting Lariskat to be.

And we all know Hoseryx started as a meme and died as a meme

I feel like a lot of people are misunderstanding how memes work even serious stuff can be meme’d and a female humanoid cat certainly have huge meme potential whether in maid suit, with googly eyes, serious or not. I feel like a lariskat will take away too much of the competition because of this because people want to meme it more for what jokes they can make with it both during and after the fact.

Bigmunga was another silent meme(that lariskat has the potential to be) due to the playset faxon and what ended up being canon the only bomonga using a faxon.

I get your reasoning but I don’t agree with this line of thinking since it basically stops anyone from trying something out there because it could become a meme. Like I’m going for a Mata Blue and Metru Blue Tuyet, but should I not do that because some people start making jokes about a Mata Blue Tuyet? People have made memes about eggs and other things so there’s always chance that any entry could become a joke. Choosing to throw out a concept because some people make a joke out of it is misguided as a build could be exceptional, but because someone decides to stick it in a maid outfit, we have to ban it.

Like with pink pouks and that a lot of people associate mata blue with water characters I would say that making tuyet mata blue is safe from becoming a meme. Since it inherently doesn’t have the same stigma as say Thunder thighs, fat gaaki, Lariskat and Bigmongus.

Look the example is not the point. The point is we should evaluated a model first instead of outright banning it because some people made it a meme. If’s a terrible build that just the joke, then yeah we all know it’s not made as a genuine attempt to make a canon depiction that fits in universe. But if a model genuinely tries to be as close to canon as possible and just so happens to fit a meme, then why should we ban it? Unless something outright denies it in canon or the joke is offensive, it should be able to be judged by the community and the mods. If it wins, then the community decided it was good enough to be canon.
