BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

Random idea that may lead to some less-controversial contests to iron out any issues that still exist:

There’s a handful of characters in the story that, despite us not having a visual depiction of them in-story, we know precisely what they look like (Mavrah, Botar’s Replacement, Krakua with a suletu, jerbraz, etc.). Perhaps an exclusively art contest for those characters could be an idea in the future.

Likely for a future contest lineup, but that is still far off from now.

Then just swap the order around. Have the moc contest first, then the mask contest, and finally the art contest. Ideally the art contest should merge the two previous contests together as one complete depiction. I think what @TenebraeInvictus said about artists choosing one of the top three masks to pick from synergizes well with this order.

Although time does then become the issue. If completion of the whole list does take two years with the current system, adding another layer of decision making would draw this out months longer.

I did revise what I said in a later conversation, just scroll down from this post to see my other replies.

How do we know what Mavrah looks like?

He’s just a metru matoran with a purple pakari. There’s so little room for variance there that we could build an absolutely precise set version…even though we’ve never officially “seen” him.

Ah, yes, I can see it now: a picture of absolutely nothing.
In fact, I already have a drawing of Jerbaz. Here it is:

I worked very hard on it.
I do agree with mavrah and bot2r, though

You are right. I just checked BS01. Must be a relatively new inclusion. I remember for the longest time his kanohi not being there.

The source quote for his mask was given in 2004.

I can’t imagine it would have gone undetermined for long on BS01.

@JMSOG

We don’t know his body or foot colours. But those are relatively inconsequential compared to the shape and colour of his mask, which is known, so a contest would still be fairly pointless.

We might still get some cool art out of it though. Having alternate art for Matoran in general is a welcome thing, even if it is a Matoran whose appearance is already known.

I mean, he’s an onu matoran. I’m unaware of any matoran (ON METRU NUI) that don’t have a black main body, with feet matching their mask.

The main point of the idea would be so that “no image available” would no longer be present on BS01, despite the fact we know what he looks like. It feels like just a missing final step instead of something pointlessly minor.

Technically it would require a painted piece, as on Metru Nui, all powerless masks also have a white/grey paint added to the forehead. There is no Purple Pakari with this.

I never knew that, and honestly wish I still didn’t. Kinda lame that he’s just an Onepu clone.

I like to imagine him with either a noble or scoped purple Pakari in order to help differentiate him from Onepu. Regardless, I don’t see the point in having a contest for Mavrah. There’s nothing to specify him other than his mask

Somebody could make a 3D render of Mavrah.

Apologies if this has been discussed already, but I haven’t seen it mentioned.

Rules were put in place that 3D model files for custom pieces had to be made available for free at the time of entry, to allow anyone to print them. However, with pieces originating in artwork (eg Helryx’s now-canon mask), there is is no guarantee that any 3D-printable renders made subsequently will be freely available to the community.

It borderline incentivises 3D modellers to present their mask designs as a sketch, and then come out with the printable version later. Regardless of your feelings on the matter, it would seem to undermine the reason for the 3D files asked for upfront in the first place. Perhaps I’ve missed something?

Also @TheJerminator, that was my post from 16 years ago. Oh god, some of things I said…

EDIT: I’ve seen elsewhere that Galva is working on a printable Helryx mask. Knowing that a number of designers gave their express permission for mask usage at the beginning of the contests, I trust those individuals at least.

You didn’t. I too have expressed my critique of this particular minutiae, way back when the rules were still discussed. I myself am all for 3D printed pieces. Hopefully, given the inevitable popularity of new pieces recieved purely from canonized artwork - people will always make 3D model quickly (as was the case with Helryx).

I don’t know why but sth is messed up with my browser, does not want to show me all the topics or graphics so forgive me if my question sound stupid but when Artakha contest starts/started?

There’s a poll open to determine the next contest. The character list is not necessarily the order for these contests.

One more question (sorry if already answered): It is said in rules that only a mask and weapons can be 3D printed pieces (or digital 3D models of pieces). Can I include in an entry (for characters without a mask, such as Lariska) a 3D printed piece, that will be a head (face)? I wanted to use slightly modified Galva’s “Head for Metru Eyestalk/brain” for it is more beautiful then regular Metru head.

Can we still vote for other characters we’d like to see get a canon representation, or is that now locked?

I ask this because I can’t find a thread for this and because I wanted to vote for Artakha and Tren Krom.
