Bionicle Video Game Concept I have.

Okay so basically I have had this idea for a Bionicle Video Game that is heavily inspired from both Masks of Power and Quest for Mata Nui before those games sadly never became a reality. The basic premise is that you play as amnesiac Toa who washes up on a mysterious island, how original, except this time the island is surrounded by a fog and everyone who has tried to leave has simply vanished, additionally the island already has a resident Toa team protecting it’s Matoran inhabitants, albeit a smaller one than ones we’re used to with around only three or four members, and the main Matoran settlement would notably have Matoran form every elemental tribe, not just the main six, and they would be presided over by a single Turaga.

The player would get to choose their own element and starting Kanohi at the beginning of the game and the overall gameplay would be exploring the island collecting Kanohi, encountering Rahi, helping the Matoran, but would feature an overarching main story to complete (haven’t fully figured out all the details on that yet) There also would be a few boss fights against a few Dark Hunters who have come to the island in search of something important, As a quick side not I’d like one of these Dark Hunters would be a member of the unnamed four armed species, and would named something like “Arsenal” and would have one of each of the collectable ranged blasters from each year of sets, EX: Cordak Blaster in one hand, Nynrah Ghostblaster in another, Kanoka Disc Launcher in another, Zamor Sphere launcher in the last hand, and maybe a Rotuka Spinner on their back like the Toa Hordika (as a little gag for how many ranged weapons we got in the Bionicle sets).

Every Elemental Power would have a somewhat unique play style and allow for different means of interacting with the world such as combat and traversal, and the Kanohi system will include basically all the main Kanohi we have seen in the franchise, but they have to be unlocked in progression as you explore the island and achieve objectives. Much like with the Elemental Powers the Kanohi will also greatly change your approach to combat and traversal of the island. Additionally there will be a huge variety of weapons for players to choose from, including several of the more iconic ones from the sets and several original ones. There will also be a level of body customization to the player’s own Toa ideally, though I’m not sure about the specifics of how this would work yet.

Also to avoid Lego putting down the cease and desist hammer on this for being too close to official release quality (which is the heavily theorized reason Masks of Power got hit with that), all the actual characters, locations, and story will be entirely original, the only official lego models that will appear in the game are some of the Rahi, everything else is purely based on the Bionicle universe, so it should be fairly obvious that this is a fan game and not get hit the the legality nuke.

Sadly I basically have little to no coding experience so I don’t think I’ll get around to making it, especially not on my own, so the best thing I can do is put this idea out there for anyone who is good at that stuff and willing to put the effort in to help make this.

Welcome to the Boards.

Something many studios that discuss their internal design process have mentioned is that the mechanics of a game are figured out well beyond any concrete details regarding the final graphics, the complete story, or any additional info. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of high concepts; take some time to nail down the exact feel and operation of the game, what the player would be doing the majority of the time, etc.

Do you have any experience with making video games?

If you’re wanting to learn game development and don’t want to spend a lot of money, Udemy has course sales quite often. I’ve been using them for my own game development.

I have basically no real experience, unless you could scratch coding from middle school, while it would be interesting to learn how to code everything, it might just take way too long for me to build this from the ground up on my own realistically.

Then I am not sure why you are asking for what would be significant help on a very time-consuming and labor-intensive fan project if you have no experience in making anything like it. You are essentially asking for everyone else to make this idea you have.

I would suggest aiming for a more attainable goal if you plan on making some kind of Bionicle fan project. You’re more likely to get talented volunteer help if the commitment doesn’t seem too daunting.

Are you asking for help on the project? Because I can see this as a way to see if there is enough interest to get a group together and start the process. And realistically, an Indie game like this with either a single developer or a small team - this is a multi year project. Not to discourage you by any means. Just keep a realistic time frame in mind and you won’t get overwhelmed or discouraged in the process. Don’t despise small beginnings.

Ravenloft, is that you?

So, I think that one thing that’s important to nail down is what the gameplay would be like. Is it like Breath of the Wild, BIONICLE Heroes, something else…? The game genre is pretty important when determining other aspects.

If it looks release-quality, LEGO won’t care how much of it’s original if even a little of it isn’t (like the Bionicle name or the Rahi and Dark Hunters).

Right now I’m just trying to see what the main reception is to the idea before I do anything about it.

@Zhyndea The main gameplay will ideally be something like Elden Ring meets Breath of the Wild, It’s more of a open world exploration game than anything else. lots of traversal mechanics (Ex: The Kakama, Kadin, and Kaukau) to encourage exploration across the island, having some of the other Kanohi be intractable with the environment (Ex: Using the Pakari to clear obstacles). Also I’d also really like the combat system to have a lot of diversity in ways you can approach fighting with the different Kanohi and Elements (Disorienting enemies with the Huna or Mahiki, or making yourself hit harder with the Pakari or Calix, or being more defensive with Hau.)

As for the LEGO thing, I dunno, I’d like to think that the cease and desist order was more of a fluke cause Masks of Power really looked like it could be an official Bionicle game released by LEGO (it had a bunch of official LEGO models I mean), I mean LEGO doesn’t have a track record of doing that since they were seemingly more consistently being supportive of Masks of Power and Quest for Mata Nui before things got bad.
