DEBATE: Opinion on character deaths in RPs?

Yes, there needs. I wasn’t suggesting anything, just throwing away a thought.

Yea, this is more what I mean, and that’s even how my GM runs his games. He includes these instant-kill scenarios for the sake of realism, but he will warn us if something is well beyond our ability, and if we choose to continue and get killed for it, that was our choice.

Personally, if I was the GM, I wouldn’t even include those scenarios. A Thanos-level being would never appear if my party were a bunch of normal humans. The goal of roleplaying is for the characters to overcome the challenges placed before them, and it’s the role of the GM to make those challenges difficult, but fair, never impossible.

Looking at Sauron fighting some Hobbits.
Yeah. I am with you, man!

The more unwilling you are to let your character die, the more idiotic and contrived your attempts become in order to preserve them in some form. The right answer for a GM is most often not what you want, and at the end of the day your plans for your character do not matter.

It’s not your story, it’s the players’ story, and you’ll quickly paint yourself as the villain if you can’t let go.
