Do the Wires on Kanohi Serve a Purpose?

Many of the 2001 Noble Kanohi, and a few from 2008 (I’m sure there’re more, I just can’t think of them at the moment.), feature wires in a circuit-like pattern. Are these actual mechanical elements added on to serve a purpose, like scopes on certain masks, or simply a visual feature of the design (in-universe, I mean).

It may be worth noting that in Mask of Light masks with these features make them look like separate pieces.

  1. Do the lines on Turaga Onewas Komou, or any komau ahve any significance?
    Not that I know of.

I have wondered about that myself. I think that it can largely be chalked up to them being designed in the early years of Bionicle, where art design was still being decided. Later masks and builds became more streamlined and action-figure-y. The early builds leaned in to that Technic look, looking a little more scrappy and robotic. Masks, too, were influenced by that design, which is probably why the Mahiki and Komau look more like the face of a robot than a helm.

The real question is, why does the Mahiki have a nose???
