Horror Movies

Well
I like some of the older horror movies like Friday the 13th 1, Nightmare on Elm Street 1, halloween, Blair witch project, the hills have eyes (the remake is also really good), alien (does it count?), etc.
I watched paranormal activity, but I found it super boring, un-scary, and lost no sleep over it at all. It just generally sucked to me.
The first insidious movie was pretty good, but the sequels got progressively worse.
The conjuring was actually one of my favorites. It’s one of the few modern horror movies with an actually good concept that didn’t abuse jump scares. Also, it’s based off an actually true story, which is cool. Anabelle looks like absolute crap. Instead of taking the most likely true, actually really creepy story of the Annabelle doll, they made up a boring story that makes no sense, isn’t true, and generally is awful.

Blair witch’s found footage is great, mainly because the actors were genuinely terrified. The other found footage one I love is the Spanish horror film “REC”, which America tried (and failed) to remake with “quarantine”, which apparently sucked beyond compare. Skip it. Watch REC.

Personally, I divide Horror movies into two broad categories: Shock and Dread. Slasher movies and the like rely on jump scares and gore to shock you. I hate that kind of movie. On the other hand, movies like Noseferatu or Alien don’t have much in the way of gore or jump scares, but instead rely on terrifying concepts that don’t need to be graphically illustrated. The Reapers from Mass Effect and the Borg from Star Trek are also good examples of this kind of horror. They’re terrifying because of the implications of what they can do (wipe out all life and destroy your soul/identity, respectively), and don’t need to rely on cheap shock value to do so. I enjoy that kind of horror a fair amount.

I love “the thing.” It’s so well-done.
