I am looking to modify my (Rogue One) AT-ST, but am having trouble with improvements.
I discovered this video featuring a lovely improvement near the joint connecting the legs to the “waist piece” holding the Walker head. However, my lackluster building skills cannot find exactly how they might have accomplished this.
Perhaps, one of the more savvy master builders here might aid in my quest by providing a possibility to how the waist joint was constructed? (Or, if you are aware of an alternative method to share as well.)
For clarification, could you directly identify (either in the video or in the instructions) which area you are referring to? I can’t tell precisely where the improved area you mention is as I haven’t spent a great deal of time looking at the original set.
Marked here is the area of modification in the video that allows the Walker to crouch. I am aware of the removal of this piece marked by the arrow below which when removed allows for a greater range of motion, but on how to get the leg pieces to remain sturdy and resemble the video’s mod is where my issue lies.
After comparing with the instructions and skimming the video, it seems very likely the visible axles are red 2L axles and not reddish brown stopper axles as I originally suspected. Therefore, there is really only one possibility for the legs.
The same piece you highlighted as being removed to increase the range of motion is the one attaching the leg to the body of the AT-ST. At first I thought something clever had been done to increase the stability of the piece, but it appears the rest of the hip area is entirely unmodified.
Regardless, I personally don’t see how the friction of this particular pin would be enough to maintain the weight of the set over time, and if it is within the scope of your modifications I would highly recommend using this piece instead, as it has noticeably greater resistance inside the pin hole and allows the leg to remain flush to the hips:
After rummaging through pieces, it appears that I will need to order this part, but for the sake of greater movement will be quite worth it.
I suppose I can focus on the face-plate until then.
I located this re-design, however, the builder did not provide any specifics as to how they accomplished this. Any tips from the experience would be appreciated.
It looks basically the same as the set, just one stud taller with a 4x4 plate on the front. I think the two wedge pieces are moved a bit lower so they cover where the spring shooters are on the set version, thus covering up the gap a bit better.
