Star Wars Topic

My apologies.

My knowledge of Doctor Who remains limited to the childhood memory of watching one of those films during a time of carefree channel perusing while staying at a hotel. The single event I remember was that version of The Doctor exploring a marsh-like setting and a tummy-ache from too much sweets.

Now, on to the latest Starfighter rumours…

Considering this one supposed “leaker” has of now maintained a 50/50 record of accuracy and has not become the next to take up the Supershadow mantle… a scene was described of a brawl scene between Kade and an alien resembling this creature (Gigoran species seen in Rogue One):

The film will have no major governing bodies ruling the Galaxy, but be a wild-west of small organizations attempting to control their sectors of a lawless Galaxy. Interesting…

What could this be? What could this mean?

Will we finally witness the Jeby’s first on-screen appearance as an extra to truly celebrate Star Wars 50th?

Oh, you don’t need to apologize; I was in the wrong!

Merely an attempt at humor on my part concerning the odd B-Movie. No worries.

The very first movie has the Death Star as a major part of the plot.

why did this post randomly pop into my head almost a year later?

Episode VII has stars going supernova as the payload delivery system for Starkiller Base. So that one, at least, explicitly uses stars in the plot (the base also runs on plasma extracted from a nearby star, which actually makes it particularly unstable as it should start having structural issues from channeling continent-sized gobs of plasma into its core. The First Order is genuinely kinda insane for even attempting this.)

Erm that’s ahktually a space station :index_pointing_up:

Finally, a Star Wars film where a war happens involving stars :relieved:
And the film was awful :sob:

I like how Disney Jar Jar Abrams came up with the worse Ep 4 by making the Death Star bigger and also significantly more unsafe and prone to exploding in the process

But they don’t call it the Death Space Staion, do they?

Erm, akshually it’s the “Death Cube with Dish Emitter” so we don’t have all the complaints about it not meeting the Alderaanian Material Safety Standards…

Well.

By now, you guys have probably heard the rumors that Lucasfilm is hiring Jon Watts as director and Simon Kinberg as writer for a potential Episode X. Disney/Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed this, hence why I’m calling it a “rumor,” but still.

It’s got me rather worried.

Now Jon Watts, I have no problem with. He helmed the first three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, which we all know were really successful. (So cue some of you coming up and berating me about how those movies are actually hot garbage that ruined Spider-Man beyond belief.) At any rate, Jon Watts also worked on the Skeleton Crew. While I didn’t “love” that series, I still found it pretty fun-and definitely leagues better than The Acolyte. Based on that track record, I’m open to the idea of him helming an actual new Star Wars movie.

But as you might expect, Simon Kinberg is the real source of my worry.

To be fair, he has done SOME good things. He was a producer on The Martian and the first 2 Deadpool movies, and he wrote X-Men: First Class and Days Of Future Past. But you know what else he wrote? X-Men: The Last Stand. X-Men: Apocalypse. Dark Phoenix. THE 2015 FANTASTIC FOUR.

Like, seriously.

No offense to Mr. Kinberg, but if you want to get people (read: the sequel haters) back on board, what makes you think THIS GUY is the one for the job? If anything, most of the movies I mentioned ended up getting the Marvel/X-Men fans OFF board. Fan4stic, like I said, is a rather egregious example. That movie infamously bombed, even the director hated it, the sequel was cancelled, and it was another ten years before we got a new FF movie. Yes, I know a lot of those issues came from the executive meddling, but still. Simon Kinberg went on to work on Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, and The New Mutants-none of which fared much better.

And none of that is even getting into the fact that earlier this year, Disney tried putting out a new Star Wars movie, and it actually made even less money than Solo’s infamously low box-office gross. Yikes. There’s still Starfighter coming next year, but we know next to nothing about its story or characters-besides the fact that it takes place after Episode IX. Which ALREADY seems to have turned off a lot of people…despite the fact that there’s nothing to suggest it’ll directly tie in with the characters or plotlines from the ST, but that’s a separate argument.

In any case…if these rumors are true, then I am legitimately concerned. A bunch of you in this very thread have came at me, making your cases for the ST being awful films and that I’m wrong to defend them, but…well, despite all these flamewars, deep down, I do care about this galaxy far, far away, and the characters that live within it. I don’t want Star Wars to fail. Even in the aftermath of the ST, when the backlash was still going strong (heck, you could easily make a case that it still is), I wasn’t too worried, because they still seemed to be pumping out more content. But now the fan backlash is taking its toll worse than ever.

If Star Wars is gonna really restore its former glory, Mr. Watts and Mr. Kinberg are gonna need a HUGE stroke of luck. Assuming the rumors are true, that is.

We have all learned thanks to The Acolyte that just because the sequel trilogy is abominable, it doesn’t mean it can’t get worse :relieved:

The only hope for Star Wars lies in the power of Ryan Gosling. That’s all there is left. And as The Gray Man and The Fall Guy proved, that’s not a guarantee by any means.

I am growing increasingly tired of the misfired rumours surrounding the release date of a Starfighter trailer…(perhaps now it is certain that the trailer will be shown with screenings of Doomsday.)

Anywho…

The glaring issue of the Sequels remains an unfocused “cohesion” between the three mainline films. However, much of the supplementary material proved quite splendid. (Which is why the Sequel films post-TFA are quite irksome in that General Hux and Captain Phasma have such rich origins, setting them up as rivals with Kylo and each other, only for both to be treated as jokes in the following stories?)

TFA was merely a remake of New Hope attempting to court those burned by the Prequels. Perhaps Disney will do so again…but this time mirror the Prequels as everything seems to shine favorably on them now, and recently to its detriment.

Starfighter appears to wholly embrace 1970s Star Wars in approaching the story as simply a swashbuckling, sci-fi adventure that the franchise began as, which might do well…I hope.

The idea of refraining from focusing on well-established family dynasties to explore non-Force Users (for the most part) navigating a lawless galaxy outside the eye of the large factions of Rebels/Imperials/etc. is what drew me to the premise.

Rogue One and The Mandalorian and Grogu were the two films I enjoyed the greatest out of this Disney Era. But fans should not be receiving this many films in one go as it lessens the atmosphere of having a Star Wars film in theaters from a generational-changing event to more of a forced meal.

Aside from Starfighter, which is the perfect release for a film due to marking the 50th of the franchise.

But, if anything, we are getting a re-release of the non-special edition versions of the Original Trilogy. How exciting

I absolutely agree here. I hate that Phasma was set up to be on par with Mandalorians, but barely appeared in the entire trilogy before being unceremoniously killed.

I still need to read her origins novel…

Though, if nothing else, at least she got a little more to do in TLJ than TFA. I still remember when I first saw TLJ in theaters, and when Phasma showed up, I was grinning at the sight. In hindsight, her takedown might’ve been on the undignified side, but…then again, let’s not pretend Boba Fett went out any better. Or Darth Maul, either.

Yes, I know Maul came back in Clone Wars and Rebels. And yes, those shows did give his character more depth. But as I’ve said way too many times over the years-if you just watched the movies on their own, with no supplemental material, you wouldn’t get any of that.

Maul had presence. Phasma mostly just existed with implication. There’s a pretty big difference that can be seen reflected in toy sales and character relevancy; everyone cares abut Maul, and nobody cares about Phasma.

Even at the time of the film’s release, with no supplemental material to build off of, Maul was still a more complete and understandable character at just a glance. Lucas has his faults, and they are numerous and notable, but one thing he does not suck at is visual communication - you know everything about Maul the moment you see him, while Phasma is a new stormtrooper but silver.

Just by looking at Maul, you would see that he’s a scary-looking Sith apprentice who wields a double-bladed lightsaber. What else beyond that? You wouldn’t know who he is, where he came from, why he’s so angry about everything, what his bigger goal is…

Those things are crucial parts of character development. Especially when Darth Maul is touted as one of the main antagonists. Boba Fett is a little more forgivable, since he’s merely a bounty hunter that the actual main villains hired on for assistance. He doesn’t necessarily need as much character development.

Which would tell you that she’s not just some random mook. Since she is a captain, she has something that stands out about her. Which isn’t much more than what Maul’s appearance conveys, but nonetheless.

The goal with first appearances is to land what’s being conveyed. Maul has an appearance wildly different from anything that appeared in Star Wars up until that point, with red and black patterns across his face and a set of horns making it absolutely impossible to confuse him for anyone other than the bad guy, especially given his dressing in all black and wielding lightsaber tech literally twice as potent as the hero characters.

Phasma is silver and has a cape.

Rank is literally the only thing notable about her character design or her first appearance. She shares the same overly-polished, factory-issued appearance of the rest of the new stormtroopers. She has as much design hierarchy above the stormtroopers she leads as the sandtrooper leader does with his differently-colored pauldron.

There’s more details that get added later for both these characters, but first appearances are everything. And Phasma sorely lacks in first appearances while Maul, and Dooku, and Grievous, and Vader, and Palpatine, and pretty much every major character Lucas oversaw the design for has in spades.

The first one is OK, the second one is a hot mess of awfulness, and the third only gets redeemed via fanservice and Willem Dafoe continually being the master of KINO. They’re not great Spider-Man films, adaptationally. (I say this as someone whose read about 600 issues of the comics from the 60s-90s)

But that’s besides the point. Watts has a boring directive style in my opinion. I agree however Simon Kinberg is absolutely a stinky part of this project and will likely destroy it.

However I think this also will be like every Disney Star Wars film announcement after the sequels: nothing will become of it.

Oh yeah. I really regret not saying that in my opening post. Current Lucasfilm’s track record of announcing projects that’ll never get made is enough to rival that of the DCEU. Mind, a lot of the announced-then-scrapped projects happened when Kathleen Kennedy was in charge, and she’s out of Lucasfilm now, but still. I see this as another reason not to take these rumors as 100% fact just yet.

Well, he actually got off at least one shot instead of just getting domed with a riot baton. Had Han Solo not sniped Fett’s jetpack by accident, Fett could’ve escaped (somehow the explosion didn’t detonate his anti-vehicle missile in that movie).
