Yes it is. Nobody enjoys misery, and misery shouldn’t be the point of a story. Misery can drive a story, but making it the focus is not my idea of a good story. What’s good for comics, is to write good stories that convey truth. This idea of being “relatable” is very shallow in storytelling, it doesn’t really define or make characters. Characters exist to drive a story and tell it’s truths. Sometimes, a story doesn’t call for characters to be relatable. Sometimes, it is better for a character to be a role model or aspiration, or sometimes even an allegory.
I know comic book channels and school will teach you about relatability being why stories are “good” but in reality it’s just appeasing the ego. Tired of comic books appeasing the ego. They should build on their characters, but they constantly tear them down with tragedy and misery. I tired of that. It’s why I made Emerald-Man, I wanted to oppose that with positivity and characters who grew. Even if I do have tragedy in the comics.
