My understanding is that, for a word (or other string of letters) to get caught by the filter, it has to start and end with the same letters as a banned word, and contain all of the other letters in between in the same order as they appear in the banned word.
Surprisingly, this means that you can type legitimate, unobscured obscenities as long as you put a single (different) letter at the start.
