Toa Heatwave's first Art (of Toa Heatwave...)

Well, I think it’s finally time for me to get in on this “creative” stuff…and since my friends generally consider me a good artist, I figured I’d start there.

I drew this piece a couple months ago, intending it to be the first BIONICLE art I actually colored digitally. However, since I’m new at Photoshop, I didn’t really get it to where I wanted it, so I settled for coloring it (haphazardly) in MS Paint. It’s not the best coloring job, but I’m satisfied enough to share it. I present to you, my BIONICLE OC (and the source of my username)—Toa Heatwave!

Yeah, absorb the name while you can. I’ll get to it later…trust me.

But, a little backstory. ‘Ol Heatwave was a Ta-Matoran who lived on the Tren Krom Peninsula. 2,500 years before Spherus Magna’s Reformation (the year Kojol stole the Avohkii), Heatwave’s village was occupied by that very Makuta, who stopped on the Northern Continent to repair his storm-damaged ship. In the process, Kojol confronted the Peninsula’s only Toa, Quintar (not canon, just another of my OCs), whom he had battled before, looking to settle scores. Heatwave and six of his Matoran friends watched in horror as Quintar was slain, but with his dying breaths, the hero channeled his Toa Power into the seven villagers, transforming them into Toa. The new Toa were rescued by Tobduk, who was pursuing Kojol, and brought to Daxia, where they joined the OOMN (though Helryx was reluctant to allow them, giving her dislike of recruiting Toa). Heatwave was trained by none other than Hydraxon, and faced many adventures and trials, including the betrayal of one of his teammates, who joined the Brotherhood, but those stories are too numerous to explain. If I ever get around to making a BZP account, I’ll post them there, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out!

Now…the name. Yes, I know. You don’t have to tell me. All I can say is…I was 11, and nostalgia is a hard force to overcome. Thus, Heatwave. Although, it’s not so bad, because according to the Matoran Dictionary created by BZP’s wonderful Tolkien, I have roughly translated the syllables of Heatwave into Matoran, and have come up with “thing of a great, subtle mind,” which—again, if my family/friends are to be believed—describes me well enough. I do make great fun of my naming skills in my fanfiction, and many of my characters often joke around about Heatwave’s…unconventional name.

Heatwave’s main weapon is his Protosteel longsword, which he forged himself, having no Toa Tool upon his transformation. He also possesses a number of mechanical implants and upgrades, given by the OOMN, some of which include grappling cables, telekinetic implants, and the ability to transform his left arm into an Energy Cannon (apparently I also wanted him to be OP when I was 11)…

Enjoy! Constructive criticism is appreciated!

Well, 11 was my Transformers phase…lol, I think there is an Autobot named Heatwave, too…

Thanks for the feedback!

Love the amount of detail and proportions, not to mention a great back story.

Amazing. Not perfect, but impressive. (or at least better than I can produce right now)

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I’m glad you enjoyed!

Looks a tad too human-like for my tastes.

Yes, there is.

Yeah, I know there’s a line between “too human” and “too robotic.” I settled into this style because (1) it’s the easiest for me, since drawing a human figure and then mechanizing it is simpler than creating something robotic that resembles a human and (2) the GBs based Toa ff of the Glatorian, who are mostly organic, so I incorporated that aspect into my art. Of course, I know that won’t appeal to everyone!

In my perception, the black bits (which are probably what make him most clearly human) are still metal, just a special type of “organic,” malleable metal, which allows movement. But there are characters I’ve created who are far more mechanical looking.

Thanks for your feedback!

That’s great man! The backstory and the art! Hey, I was wondering if you could do a quick (and I mean quick) avatar sketch for me. If you’re up to it I’ll DM you the pics. Anyway looks great!

I went into this thinking it was gonna be a Toa version of the autobot…still cool regardless.

Oh, I’m always up for some Avatar! So yeah, send 'em my way!

Basically something like this. If you don’t have time it’s fine

Lol, don’t worry about it! Do you just want the mask, or a whole character?

Just the mask is fine! Make sure you get the red eye piece in

You got it! I’ll get started!
