I think the implication is that this is the shape of the Mask of Intangibility, and Gaaki is honouring a past bearer of the Mask of Intangibility with her mask.
EDIT: I screwed up here; this isn’t Gaaki’s mask.

This series of notions would be super awkward for the Dark Mirror serial, seeing as the Toa Hagah sided with Empress Tuyet in this universe; Tuyet has a whole freaking colossal statue of her Mask too

specterL did partially base the final gaaki mask off of this mask, so it could still be a variant of the mask of intangibility that gaaki has her mask based off of.
