Unpopular Opinions about LEGO

Same. Can whoever is doing this please tell us what’s considered objectionable in this context? Or should I wait until I receive a warning from the staff for asking if I should just quit this topic, since someone here thinks comparing Ninjago and Power Rangers to be self-advertising? Because I am actually going to mute this topic unless someone is willing to tell me what I did that violates board rules. This isn’t Skial, this isn’t Steam or Reddit, I’m pretty sure offenders are entitled to being read our rights instead of getting shadow-reported over mecha and Ninjago.

For the record, I was the one who flagged your post, although I was quite certain I had flagged it for being a double post and not as an advertisement. I still fail to see how my follow-up post, which pointed that out, needed to be deleted as it continued the original discussion and shared my two cents on the idea of LEGO’s persistence in its endless quest to mech-ify every topic on the planet.

Regardless, to ensure that this post is hopefully not deleted, I will add another opinion about LEGO which I have which may or not be unpopular, as the last one I shared seems pretty universal:

LEGO maybe probably shouldn’t bring Bionicle back.

Thanks. The warning I received said it was reported as advertising, I got really confused there.

IDK, if this has already been said by someone or by me before, but in case it wasn’t:

The Toa Metru would fit better as a team in an official 3rd Gen than the Mata/Nuva.

My reasons for this are the following:

  1. We had two gens already with the Og six as the main characters.
  2. While to my knowledge, most casual fans only remember the Mata as the Toa, a G3 would cater a lot more towards newcommers than older fans.
  3. It is a personal one, but I always thought that the premise of the Metru are more compelling than the Mata’s.

The Metru were ordinary people, who one day found themselves in a situation they couldn’t control in roles they had never prepared for.

Unlike, the more mythical and mysterious Mata, who always felt more like these demi-gods with amnesia.

I think, that if a Gen3 were to happen in the future, a more typical story of every-day-folks become heroes would appeal more to the wider range of consumers.

Honestly, I agree with this. The Toa Metru get better character development thanks to having an actual origin in the story, while the final reveal of the Mata having been built like a set of Iron Man armors to be weapons kind of ruins their own character.

Precisely! And for this reason, I’m firmly convinced that the average consumer would have an easier time identifying with the Toa Metru.

Their story (Especially Vakama’s) reflected the “hero’s journey” structure, which remains a very popular and successful format in fictional stories.

I think the high prices for the new summer 2025 star wars sets are unreasonable when considering that the vehicles are made of recycled parts. I mean compare these to any of the 2002 attack of the clones star wars sets and you can see the obvious difference in budget. But that’s a good thing since now there’s less to buy.

1. I think both the SW human characters and the DC/Marvel CCBS Superhero figures were decent.
Don’t get me wrong, their faces were undoubtedly uncanny-looking and horrendous design-wise, but if we abstract from that, then they are pretty good sets.
Plus, they came with many useful parts, which were either completely new or recolored at the time.

2. The Piraka as sets are way too overrated, IMO.
They did feature some nice weapons, and their aesthetics are pretty neat.
However, most of their gimmicks, as the glow-in-the-dark teeth and the shoehorned light-up function in their brain stalks, have aged poorly in my eyes.

3. Lego shouldn’t abandon making those larger brick-built figures that got introduced with the Iron Man Mark 43 set from 2022. (According to many unofficial sources, they already did.)
They are somewhat a step up from the earlier attempts of the CCBS era, and I am genuinely convinced that if they put more effort into these, they would serve as a nice alternative for Technic constraction. (Unless, if by some miracle, they would reach back to that…)

If that used a switch instead of a pressure button, it would be a great improvement. I could finally wake up at night and see eyes ominously staring from my shelves…

I still have that Ghid doll I posted in the HSH. He has seen everything I’ve done.

TBF, that’s not an unpopular opinion.
From what I have seen so far, people in the LEGO community are generally in consensus that the newest SW sets have terrible prices.

Definitely, but I see them selling at the supermarket so kids still want them. We live in a world where the slop lilo and stitch remake grossed over a billion dollars so obviously if it has nostalgic value it will sell, sell, sell. If a kid gets enjoyment out of a clone turbo tank more power to them. Everyone values lego differently.

True dat!
I guess I had underestimated the power of nostalgia in today’s market and society.
But, anyway, you are correct!

Today Unpopular Opinions:

1. IMO, Phantoka Pohatu was great in terms of Color.
The orange he got as “elemental” or primary color was a nice pick for him.
It has a nice contrast with His mostly dark-bluish gray build, and overall, it is distinctive enough to make him stand out from the other Toa and the Makuta.

2. Speaking of which: The newer bluish/stone gray shades are better than the older shades of gray.

3. Lego should rework or redesign the Mixel socket joints, because they are still pretty fragile.
They are far from being as bad as the infamous lime joints from 2007 and the ones from 2008 to 2010, but they still break quite often.

The last one I have not had experience with, how exactly have you had them break?

The shades of gray have their pros and cons. Obviously the new grays have more curved pieces than the old. The new grays can be sourced from china while the old grays can’t be. There are earlier recolors that can only be sourced in the old grays, the light gray minifig flipper for instance or the 2507 tapered windshield.

Quite often. It usually happens to me when I try to turn the ball joint at a sharp angle, causing the neck of the ball to press tightly against the taller side of the socket.

BTW, this is a relatively common problem; I have read many complaints about it on Lego-centric forums.
(You’re lucky if it hasn’t happened to you yet.)

Hmm, I didn’t know that.
Well, TBH, I’m not that familiar with Lego’s proprietary and manufacturing characteristics regarding colors.
(Although I should be, because this knowledge would come in handy for my G3 project.)
Anyway, my statement about dark blue-gray was based purely on personal preference and taste.

Isn’t this the same issue all socket parts have had? This rather begs the question of exactly how hard you’re pressing these parts. I haven’t had that issue mostly because I’m not intentionally putting stress on them in directions they aren’t supposed to be stressed. Couldn’t many of these breakages by solved simply by rotating the socket 90° to use the recessed sides instead of the ones with the tall edges?
