Volans' Toa-Heroes

Hello everyone, I’m a bit new here but I figured I might as well go and post some MOCs of mine. These are some of my Toa. I’ve had the concept of them for about 5-6 years at this point, and they’ve gone through a lot of different iterations. Along with the pictures I’ll be talking about some of my design/thought process for each. I have five total MOCs I want to show.

The current influences on their designs have included the Metal Gear Solid series, Rainbow Six (the novel, and R6S), the Metroid series, fighter jets, and knights and medieval combat. It’s a melange of interests accumulated over said 5-6 years.

I’ll start with my self-moc, Toa Volans.

He’s a Toa of Air because I always liked the “lighthearted jokester” archetype as a kid, and I also like airplanes and flying. It just seemed fitting for me. He wears the Kanohi Calix because I’ve always thought that extreme reflexes would be a really, really cool power.

He carries a real big heavy sword, but I’m also planning on eventually giving him a katana on his hip. Volans has always been the noble type in my mind, so he’s probably the most ‘knightly’ of my designs, some of my older version of him even had a big kite shield. I kinda wish I had some Knight’s Kingdom armor pieces to give him to really drive home that aspect though.

Next is Toa Navis, a water Toa.

She wears this made-up mask called the Kanohi Avaku and its power is laser vision (not heat vision, but laser vision- beams of light, not heat). She’s gone through a lot of changes regarding her character while going through very little change in design. Any big design changes were internal structure modifications to the torso, so they weren’t immediately noticeable, otherwise I just move around where her armor shells are because I’m indecisive. She used to have purple though.

The shoulderpad is currently on the right shoulder but as seen here it used to be on the left:

Navis used to carry a big sword and stuff but her weapons have shifted as I’ve developed her personality in my head. While I used to think she’d be more cheery, I think she’s more of a quiet, serious, and brooding type. I’ve made her a sniper to complement that. I haven’t got many pictures though because I literally finished the design a couple weeks ago. As you can see, this is where a lot of that MGS/R6 inspiration comes into play.

Just the other day I also decided to give her a bandolier with what are probably smoke grenades. Note the scope was also changed again.

This is Toa Tess, she’s a Toa of Lightning. She is an infiltration specialist and wears a Kanohi Volitak. This one is a cheery character.

She’s undergone a lot of design changes, but I think I’ve finally gotten to a point where I’m satisfied with the general feel of her. She has an antenna and sensors built-in to her mask. I don’t have many interesting/good pictures of her in her latest form but I have some in the prior variant. The only significant change is the lower legs.

She used to have this thing where she could transform her arms into blasters but I haven’t decided whether or not I want to keep that.

I had come up with Tess being an infiltrator before I even knew what Metal Gear Solid was, but once I did get into MGS it was all too easy.
Here’s a picture of her taking point with a pistol at the corner of a wall while Navis covers her back with an SMG.

Toa Nero is a Toa of gravity. He wears the Kanohi Hau.

I’ve never been able to really nail down his design, or his character. He just kinda exists in my head, as a guy, that… exists… The above model is kinda in pieces right now because I was having issues with posing and durability. And he used to have the colorscheme of a Toa of plasma because I wanted to do something with all of my orange, lol.

Here is orange Nero in the rain with a purple and blue Navis. For his latest variant, Nero stole those purple pieces lol. This design features an arm cannon which was inspired by Metroid. One thing I’ve always been certain on is that he’s a heavy gunner/heavy weapons kind of guy.

Here’s one more picture of Nero with Toa Tess behind him. It’s hard to tell, but he is lobbing a frag grenade (he’s wearing the same bandolier that’s now on Navis).

Finally, and I hope I haven’t bored you here lol, here is Toa Silva.

She is a Toa of Plantlife and she wears a Kanohi Faxon. She’s one of my favorite designs because I managed to make her very poseable and durable.

You’ll see here that she has dual forearm blades but I’ve decided to get rid of them in favor of a bo-staff that can split into hanbo (half-bo). Haven’t got the pieces to execute that in physical form yet though.

Here’s some pictures of her outside. I kinda put mud on her but don’t worry, I made sure she spent some good time under the sink to wash it all off lol.

Anyways, that concludes my moc post. If you got to here, thanks for reading! I hope you all like my Toa team. I haven’t got many pieces available right now (everything but the Toa, some technic for the weapons, and one custom rahkshi are in storage). If you guys want some specific pics of them or even want to see some of my older designs just let me know

Hold up, your username sounds familiar… Were you on the Bionicle LMB forum back in the day, by any chance?

Either way, great-looking mocs; I especially like the color schemes on Nero, Navis and Silva!

Good work on all of these designs, but my favorite is Tess, I always like seeing snazzy usages of that mask (it definitely can be done wrong).

Howdy Volans. Glad to see you made your way here. Been a while since I saw the Toa Volans MOC.

Thank you! I’m glad there’s people here who can appreciate the waffle-eye as much as I do.

Welcome to the message boards!

Always been a fan of that mask, and he has a pretty strong figure. Your issue is in the different shades of green between his torso and his limbs. Lime and silver all the way would do it, if you have more lime; and that would also fix the problem of how exposed the thighs are.

She reminds me of one of @Invader39’s characters - don’t remember the name at the moment. Looks too be pretty solid all around, though she could benefit from having some more blue in some capacity.

Not a fan of this design. The shins and the shoulders are too bulky for the rest of her; the torso’s shoulders are too wide for the type of build you’re going for, and I’ve never been a fan of that mask.

Also not big on this one, it looks like a messy build overall. Some cleaning up of his colors and parts would do a lot - I like the orange version more mainly because he doesn’t have those clunky shells on his shins. Those are too big for the size of your MOCs.

This might be your best one, she’s got a good color scheme and a solid aesthetic. The main changes she needs are a bit more coverage on the shins, plus a few color changes on the shins - primarily to replace the trans light blue bone, but also to get rid of the light grey if you can. You might want to add in a little bit of silver on the legs to match the shoulder pads.

She actually reminds me of LoganWoerner’s Niha. Maybe she kind of resembles my version of Niha? idk

Thank you for the welcome and the constructive criticism! I appreciate it!

I can’t wait to get my hands on my BIONICLE pieces whenever I have the opportunity to get them out of storage.

I agree with your advice on Silva’s legs and I think your comment about Tess’s shoulders being too wide was interesting, so I’ll definitely look into those! Hopefully I can clean up Volans as well. I haven’t got many lime pieces so perhaps I should go and bricklink some specific ones that would suit my needs.

As for Nero, well, I’ll make something that works eventually, lol

How’s this for less broad shoulders?

Yeah, that works much better.

Pardon me if I’m wrong, but does her build have any inspiration from this revamp?
breez front
I couldn’t find the original creator of it, but I was wondering due to the Inika shoulder front and HF foot back.

On the other hand, these are some of my favorite MOCs I’ve seen recently, the more limber, poseable, somewhat thinner style is great, especially for the waffle-eye mask, I think that’s it best suiting body right there.

Inika Shoulderpads for feMOC torsos is a common trope at this point, and not without reason. It implies a feminine form in a subtle fashion, which can be hard to do on a MOC of this scale. Using feet for back armor is another common MOCing trope, but I wouldn’t usually go with HF feet.

I suppose, yeah. Just seemed oddly specific. My bad!

I love these. Navis and Silva are my favourites, the outdoor photography is really cool as well. Look forward to seeing updates on these-Toa Nero has a lot of potential, have you thought of making it that he is wearing a exoskeleton? I think it looks like that at the moment with the size difference between torso and limbs. All you would need is some technic to look like a harness and maybe white ccbs shell instead of purple.

Hmm. I don’t think I’ve never seen that Breez MOC before, but I see the similarities!

Thank you so much for the kind words, though. I appreciate them!

@Axelford Wow! I love that idea of Nero wearing an EXO-suit! I’ll definitely try that when I have the chance.Thank you so much for that idea.
