Could the Kaukau function outside of water?

The Kaukau has always been an odd case to me, in that it’s power is oddly specifically tied to water/liquid protodermis, which heavily limits it’s usefulness. Is it possible that it could be have been used like a gas mask or oxygen mask aswell, to hold your breath in things other than water, such as in space, poisonous gas or other liquids?

I’m sure it functions more like scuba gear. It’ll help you breathe while submerged, but it won’t protect you from the elements

I don’t see the point you’re making?

No it’s terrible

It only let you breathe under water, it won’t keep you save in space

I’m not asking if it would keep you safe in space, I’m asking if it would allow you to breath in space (or a room without air…)

Most likely no.

Key words: Most likely.

We don’t know. Which is why the question is directed at Greg, since it is in the Ask Greg category…

Greg answered this a few years back.

“It was originally created for use with liquid protodermis, but no, it would not work in the vacuum of space, anymore than fish could breathe in a vacuum.”
