Original purposes of the Kanohi?

Got another one.

Of course, as we know them now, kanohi are primarily used for their mask powers by Toa, and to “power up” the matoran.

But why were the kanohi created in the first place? How do they contribute to supporting the MU? Why would the great beings create matoran with such a vulnerability when there are other species within the MU that can function without kanohi?

Ah, but do we know what vulnerabilities those other species may have? With the masks, the Matoran have a largely unending power source so they can keep working. I always saw them as essentially a rechargeable battery pack.
