How does one become a mod? are mods kinda chosen or can you get to it like a trust level?

Admins like @Mesonak and @IllustriousVar usually reach out to members who have stood out and shown borderline-unhealthy levels of dedication to the Boards. And new Mods normally only get selected when preexisting ones resign/retire.
