A custom design for System Bionicles!

Greetings!

A few months ago, i attempted to create a Brick-built Bionicle for a LEGO Ideas challenge. I aimed for a scale that balanced detail and simplicity: A bit larger than the GWP Tahu to allow for extra details, but small enough to fit into the 250 part count limit and be affordable enough as a potential G3 or re-release of the G1 Toa.

It didn’t make it to the voting phase, but i continued to iterate on and improve it as much as i could. Ladies and gentlemen, Midi-Scale Mata Nui!

The build is made entirely with currently produced parts, and uses bars plus rounded & textured elements extensively to replicate G1’s mechanical look (and lil Click as well!).

Most articulations are there, but i left that two-finger design as a homage to the original Toa Mata, and for scale reasons as well.

I feel like this has great potential for customization for different builds. Present-day system parts and joints can get really close to the aesthetic of the original Bionicle line. What do you think?

While the title of the topic says this is a custom design for Bionicles [sic], we get Mata Nui as an example. Do you have any renders of the design without a specific character in mind, so the base ‘skeleton’ of the frame can be seen?

Something like this? The torso area is quite integrated though, so there is not much distinction between skeleton and armor/detailing.

It’s a system reimagination of the Inika build, specifically. I tried to maintain or improve the proportions of the original sets.

Mata Nui was the choice for the contest, i really like the yellow/black contrast of that set.

Quite a fun design. I’m guessing the frame would be modified for different body shapes, because this doesn’t look like it’d lend itself well to something like the Piraka. Still a very nice build, and Mata Nui looks pretty good in this style!

This is a great design! For me, being made of Technic parts is a key feature of Bionicle, but I’d totally be into this. I assume this is about the size of the Creator super robot but with better articulation?

Yeah, it’s a similar scale, but with longer limbs and different overall proportions.

I used ball joints for the knees at first, but the 2D joints were better for building the armor around it whilst still allowing movement.

I’m not really a fan of using bar and clip connections for major joint connections. They just don’t have enough friction for that in my experience. The hip construction also looks like it would be pretty flimsy, I could see this figure falling forward very often.

Here’s an alternate torso build for Matoro:
