Advice for custom limbs?

I can get torsos down well enough for now, but limbs are bugging me.

Anyone have have any tips?

Most of the time limbs don’t need to be completely custom. Maybe try taking inspiration from other builders. Keep them fitting the style too. Try to keep them somewhat preportional. I can’t say much more than that. Hope it helps.

PLAGIARISM

Seriously though, try out designs you see on other MOCs, see how things work. Eventually you’ll be familiar enough with everything that you’ll start to synthesise your own ideas. Just remember to credit every time!

Though if you look at my particular style, more often than not I still don’t use custom limbs. They’re not the be all and end all. Just depends on the build style you have.

And as rota lorem says, proportions are key. Whenever I’m building I tend to stop and stand up and look myself over to make sure the proportions roughly work. Like how far down the leg should the fingers end, that sort of thing.
Of course, if you’re carrying a few more pounds than you should like me, it doesn’t ā€˜quite’ work so well. And then there’s the fact that these are basically action figures, who don’t have accurately human proportions. Check out any superhero action figure or similar and compare them to a real human being and you’ll see they’re not quite the same shape.

My kind of advice.

I just use CCBS. They work well, unless you’re making a really big guy that is.

My problem with using bone pieces is that I don’t have any tire pieces to fill out the natural gaps in the pieces.

Most moc with complex limbs use discontinued parts to give it a ā€œslikā€ bulk.

That’s annoying, i don’t have those pieces, so it’s tough.

As for on topic, look at how others do it. It’s alot faster than teaching yourself.

It’s not that big of a problem to have, y’know? The tires help, but they aren’t necessary.

If you don’t care about elbow articulation as much just use some of the larger CCBS pieces as those have better connection points for at least somewhat custom limbs. Tires should also be used sparingly on some joints or anywhere near hands and feet as it severely limits articulation.

A minimal technic base with good amounts of connection points is good. Then you could add armor on easily for detail.

Know for what purpose you want limbs to be custom, before building. For a lot of mine, it’s because there aren’t CCBS bones in the lengths that I want. Another reason I run into a lot is because I want to use a certain armor placement that I can’t use on a simple prefab limb.

This is a good way to go about it.

I’m working on a design for a MOC that has regular CCBS as the bones, I guess, and I’m using system around it. He’s supposed to have a blocky shape, so I’m not sure if it will help in your case, but maybe you could try something similar to that?

  • Hide things under like floating shoulder pauldrons.

  • bulk out an already existing limb

  • don’t stick to humanoid shapes

… Don’t take my advice I’m terrible at limbs
