I gues they are more based of Saurons weapon in LOTR, a heavy weapon with sharp edges.

I love maces! Too bad it would make no sense for a toa of plantlife to have one…
Actually it would. Clubs seem to make the most sense for a Toa of plantlife, and a mace is literally just an enhanced club… So…
