Annona the Great

“Dreams are my meat and drink. With them, I am power.”

Behold, Annona the Great.

Who or what is Annona? Simply put, Annona is an ancient entity, one who predates Spherus Magnan civilization as we know it, one who only a few know of her existence, and one who even fewer comprehend her powers or her motivations. Some of her most noteworthy achievements include nearly wiping out the Iron Tribe of Spherus Magna in a disaster that would later become known as the Dreaming Plague, playing a joke on the Skrall by giving the women psionic abilities and watching the fallout between them and the men, later abducting said female Skrall and turning them into her personal puppets, and inspiring the individuals who would later become revered as the Great Beings into creating the Matoran Universe and everything inside. After the death of Makuta Teridax, Mata Nui electing to make himself dormant, and the Great Beings she’d made apparently having had dispersed, Annona resurfaced, ready to wreck havoc on Spherus Magna again. She was ultimately stopped during a skirmish with a strange golden warrior and an unlikely survivor of the Dreaming Plague, with whom she compromised to leave their world alone in return for a new world to feed on.

Fun Facts About This MOC
-Annona is roughly 13 inches tall and 3 inches wide at the shoulder.
-This MOC was first designed in September 2021 and has had only one significant change since.
-This figure’s design was inspired by BionicleChicken’s design for Annona mixed with some Doc Ock. I had no idea at the time–and still don’t–of how to make her look “like a star” as described by Sahmad, so I settled on giving her lots of transparent parts.

This MOC is fully buildable IRL and, in fact, I have. She does require a stand but I think it's worth it for the design. Not including the stand, which is just a mishmash of beams and bricks I had on hand, she is made of 261 pieces.

Some of the rarer/more exclusive parts needed for her build include:
  • Trans-Yellow Bohrok eyes (x2) – Despite having only appeared in the Visorak Oohnorak, this is not a very difficult piece to acquire.
  • Black pin-axles with friction (x8) – These get expensive quickly. If you’re not a super stickler for color, just get the blue ones.
  • Dark Red Skrall armor (x12) – This part in this color only appeared in one set, Xplode–thankfully a cheap one. This part isn’t expensive, but as of the time this post goes up, there is no Bricklink seller that has more than 2.
  • Trans Neon-Orange CCBS armor shell #6 (x6) – Pretty similar situation to the Skrall armor, actually. This part in this color is exclusive to Jawblade and he only had one. Thankfully this part seems to be more readily available in greater quantities.
  • Red beast blade/claw/thing (x6) – First released in a Spider-Man set in 2020 and currently exclusive to it. That set had 4 and Annona requires 6. Thankfully, that set is only a year or so old so the part isn’t that hard to find yet.
  • Red Hordika necks (x10) – Currently exclusive to the Elite Praetorian Guard, who had 2. Luckily not super expensive yet, but remember that set was released in the waning months of the Star Wars CCBS line.
  • These Dark Red CCBS bones (x2 longer length, x4 shorter length) – Both are exclusive to Black Phantom.
  • Several others that I’m probably missing off the top of my head.

-Inspired by Wombat Combat Pictures, from now on I’m going to try to give theme songs to some of my MOCs. For Annona, I’ve chosen The Final Antasma Battle from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team as her theme (bonus points if the music is transposed down one semitone to C# minor).

That’s spooky looking.

I can see her as being terrifyingly powerful. Wonder if the Great Spirit Robot could fight her, or would she just destroy its will?

wow this is a really good interpretation of Annona
I like the use of the differing red parts to create a very interesting effect.

Who in their own minds disagree? It’s traveled the worlds, and the seven seas, looking for something… (Maybe Irnakk, master of Nightmares? Perhaps.)

I’d love to see that.

It really looks like some sort of eldritch abomination, perfect for what Annona is supposed to be.

This is a great depiction. It was bold choice to make Annona so beautiful, but it works, and distinguishes her from outright terrifying-looking Tren Krom. This manages to look like an elegantly dressed lady, a beautiful rose, a colorful starfish and a terrifying crab-thing from outer space that wants to eat your soul, all at same time. Fits Annona suprisingly well.

The design hints at femininity and at horror subtly, but not too subtly. You can tell she is a female and that she is eldritch abomination just from looking at it.

I have an idea about how to make her look like a star. Stars and suns are drawn with equally long points symmetrically radiating from the center. So perhaps have all her limbs same length, and pose them like you would points of a star. Would that work?

I think I would choose Siege and Investiture by BOC as theme music. I think the sometimes dreamy, sometimes mysterious, sometimes scary music would fit better, and lyrics are somewhat relevant to Annona, especially this:
" From glare of the stars, starry wisdom
Owned by the Baron, and he’s got the cure "
And this whole section I will list below is especially fitting.
" Come and take this world without end
You will be Inventor, Invention
Letter, Earth, Wind
Rhymed like the real, and real as the rhyme
Imagine this Baron, inventor of rhymes "
Both original version and Re-Imaginos version of the song would work. What do you think, is it a good fit? Or perhaps a creepy lullaby as a feeding theme? I am not sure.
