Atrona
The universe is filled with hundreds of dangerous Rahi. Most of them are simply wild animals acting on instinct. However, there is one species, one exceptionally cunning predator, which has been isolated due to the enormous threat to the rest of the planet’s fauna. The Atrona, as these Rahi are called, were unanimously condemned by the village leaders to be confined to underground labyrinths lying deep beneath the desert lands in the northwest of the main continent, where from time to time smaller Rahi venture out and end up as food for the Atrona.
Most of the planet’s inhabitants no longer remember Atron’s existence. Even fewer realize why these monsters were banished. The reason was their way of hunting, as well as the fact that they did not avoid feeding on intelligent creatures. The truth is that predatory Rahi have powerful psionic abilities that allow them to penetrate the mind of a victim, learn all their memories, strengths, weaknesses and traumas, and then, through a telepathic connection, drive the target to insanity. When its prey is on the brink of madness, Atrona crawls out of hiding, tears its target apart with its long limbs, and devours it.
Originally, these creatures were not much more dangerous than other predatory representatives of the fauna on the planet, but with the growing population of sapient beings, a moment came when the Atrona developed a taste for the flesh of the villagers, and as a result of using psionic powers on them, they evolved, first learning the language of their victims, and soon after, becoming the smartest beings on the planet. There would be nothing wrong with it if, along with the acquired wisdom, they decided to become part of the society ruling the planet, as a new intelligent race, but the animal predator instinct was never evolutionarily supplanted, leading to the transformation of mantis-like Rahi into telepathically communicating, bloodthirsty monsters.
Isolation in the underground labyrinth, far from the surface rich in living food, led most of the females to starvation, but those that remained alive became even more dangerous. Now, they lead a boring existence in solitude, waiting for an opportunity to escape. And when they succeed, in an act of revenge, they will turn the entire surface world into a planet of madness. Insanity, which they will feed on, rebuilding their species and taking lands inhabited by other races that are rational for themselves.
