Axonn revamp

I bet you all saw the corner of my desk again and thought “oh another mediocre MOC from Vakama John Cena” but not this time! This time I’m proud to present something super solid. The axe man himself!

Like with Lariska, I’m not gonna bog down the topic with a lore dump, because everyone already knows Axonn. But a bit of backstory to the build is appropriate, not to mention my own thoughts on what a good job I think I did. Seriously, I’m super chuffed with this.

Let’s actually start with the axe head: as you can see, it’s very different from the simplistic canon axe, and uses a Guurahk staff instead of the Panrahk one. The other end of the axe kind of actually mimics the “pincer” shape of the tip, just bigger. That’s pretty neat. The Inika shoulder hides the assembly that holds the whole axe head together, centers the two pieces and keeps everything from wobbling, but also it just looks kinda neat there.

And yes, he can T-pose with the axe. That was a huge concern for me, and initially he couldn’t even really hold up his arms at all so I redid the upper arms and added friction joints; now he can hold his axe up no problem. Given that his axe (not to mention his arms themselves) is even heavier than the originals, and the original Axonn had trouble holding it up, I’d call this a win.

Speaking of the original Axonn, here’s a… height comparison? Since I used a lot of the pieces from OG Axonn to make the revamped one, all I could do for a height comparison is a crudely thrown together “height buddy” that’s only meant to be as tall as whatever figure he’s mimicking. As you can see, revamp Axonn has him beat to rights in height. Now no one will be calling him the shortest titan anymore. Because I’ve made him taller he also ended up being more proportional, which at least one person appreciated quite greatly when I shared this on Discord

Now let’s take the axoff for some turnarounds while I talk about various design aspects! Starting with the chest: while I like the original Axonn’s chest, I thought I’d do something different than just use the Nuva chest armor for him, when there’s so much more I could do. I kept the Nuva shoulders as they are, since I like them there and I like the clever way they’re attached, but I decided on a Hordika foot for the chest. It adds a bit of a different, blockier texture to him but I think it works. I also took the liberty of adding some greeblage on the side of his chest, under the arms, to fill it out a little; given that the Hordika foot is rather flat, and I attached it two units apart from the torso itself, I didn’t want to just leave it gappy there. I’m quite fond of the shaping that I’ve created!

Regarding the legs, his shins are rather simple, the only change from the original’s is the addition of Inika shoulders. The thighs are vastly different from the original’s, however; they’re a lot meatier, owing to my use of the wide Inika feet, and they also have some funky stuff on the back that I’ll get to (but you can kinda see some of it from the front already).

The feet were the first thing I built, and they consist of a Skrall armor piece over an Inika shoulder, and some technic under it to make it stable. I was surprised to find that the Skrall armor, if you put it over the Inika shoulder like this, just kinda clicks itself into place as if it was meant to fit naturally there. It doesn’t actually fit naturally there, and you’ll experience some warpage, but I deliberately used bootleg pieces to make this a non-issue for me :upside_down_face:

As you can clearly see, I’ve used Metru torsoes to make his lower arms/hands. They definitely contribute to his beefy appearance, and the Hordika foot actually fits really neatly over the back of a Metru torso to cover up that gearbox pinhole that’s jutting out of the back. And before anyone says anything, I had the idea to do this for his hands long before I saw the winning Bomonga. I stole it from a completely different MOC! Haha! It’s still not the same though, because I kept to the 4 fingered hand design of regular Axonn, though I had quite a fun time trying to attach it to the Metru torsoes. It’s also ever so slightly different with the way the thumb is connected, which results in him not quite being able to close his fist, but whatever.

The upper arms is where Nuva chests went - if he can have Nuva shoulders on his chest, he can have Nuva chests on his shoulders. Not only does it add a lot of bulk, but as the Nuva chests and shoulders were designed around each other, and the Rode was designed around them, keeping those pieces in the design makes it feel like Axonn beyond just his color scheme and mask being the same.

There’s a bunch of funky detailing on the back, courtesy of a silver Stars foot and Inika thigh. The unfortunate color-scheme-breaking 5L axle with stop was a necessity out of having to keep both the back assembly and the Rahkshi head in his crotch from wobbling, and if I’d just used a regular 5L I wouldn’t have been able to put the Inika thigh on. I personally think it’s not that bad though, it’s kind of a close enough tone to red that it blends in okay.

The back of his thighs that I mentioned earlier are also armored up, and I’ve also added some Mistika claw pieces just because I think they look nice there. It adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the design in my opinion.

Last but not least:

I put a cape on him! Phasma’s cape specifically, because of the red trim. Why give him a cape? Honestly, just because. I think it looks pretty good, especially over his non-axe arm (so it doesn’t get in the way when he’s swingin’) and it makes him feel like an important character, which being a prominent Order member, he’s meant to be one.

Oh and if I just remove one of his arms…

It’s Raubahn!

Anyway, that’s it on my Axonn revamp. Feel free to comment, critique, compliment or whatever other C-words you wish :stuck_out_tongue:

I hadn’t even seen the photos with the Phasma cape, that looks even better!

Looks fantastic! Although I feel like the proportions of his upper and lower arms should be reversed. His biceps/shoulders look oddly small next to his huge forearms. Excellent revamp overall, though, I really like the updated legs and torso armor, and of course that axe!

Nice revamp, though I think the elbow could use a little bulking up, maybe add a tire around the hordika neck piece?

Honestly, this does look even better. It does restrict his elbow movement in terms of how far they can bend, but looks wise I’m chuffed to bits with this. Thanks for the suggestion!

Glad it worked out, and I definitely agree it helps a lot.
