BIONICLE 2017 Speculation Topic

Well Lego Minecraft is a pretty cool theme I think. The others however don’t interest me all that much. I’m still baffled that a line of awfully pricy, inaccurate representations (some of them with creepy faces too) of characters sells better than highly posable, functional and awesome looking Bionicle figures. I like (some of) the SW figures, but compared to Bionicle they are objectively worse.

What if for the last year, they take out the gimmicks completely, ether all articulation or design. Would it work, would people like it? (Personally I would.)

I’m a die-hard functionist so I personally would not like that change. I love the features and the play value they offer. It also subtly shows Bionicle’s style of mechanical/functional aesthetic which enhances the building experience, you really feel like you’re building a robot. With these new torsos a simple gear-arm frame can be made quite easily (not sure why the latest Ekimu uses the gearbox), and we’ll presumably see the molded turntable again so at least basic functions are getting easier to produce without sacrificing too much of the parts that could be used for aesthetic.

Now while I do like my mechanisms I prefer a balance between function and form like most do. Sometimes an extravagant function is cool, but the set would look a lot better if a simpler function was used. However, I would hate to see functions disappear completely. I’d much rather something like the size be sacrificed rather than the mechanisms or aesthetics.

You know what I want in 2017. No more hoard sets. Hoard set are lame.

Bring in individual sets.

It’s funny how you wrote “individual sets” and then put the image of the Piraka, which are literally the first sets people identify as clone sets. I think we have enough individual villains, probably what they lack a bit is development.

I think 2017 is where Makuta is going to start beating Okoto while its down. I’m hoping we get a decimated island and another “Sons of Makuta” type scenario where Makuta makes his own elite squad.

How about higher numbers of villain sets and more villains with actual personalities?

And make the villain sets actually good.

That as well.

What I’d like most to see for 2017 is like this :

Winter Wave :

  • Usual Six Toa
  • A new villain/First Makuta form

Summer Wave :

  • Six Bad@ss villains (same price of the Toa)
  • Makuta’s final form with MoUP
  • Ekimu the "I change everytime"r

If you notice, I totally discarded the small sets, because they can give 60$ more budget to the villains. While I love to see it like this, it will surely happen this way :

Winter Wave:

  • Super Duper Omega Tahu and company
  • New little allies that can help the Toa somehow (maybe big weapons?)
  • A new villain hired by Makuta for 300 Okotollars

Summer Wave:

  • 3 useless minions bad-constructed and gappy but innovative function1!1!1!!
  • Ekimu the Insert LEGO’s imagination
  • Makuta the ???

I like this idea. Nothing against small sets, but if they are the reason we are getting villains fewer in number than and inferior in design to the hero sets in the winter I think it would be a necessary sacrifice to reduce their number.

They could also lower the size and price of the three large Toa (Tahu, Kopaka, and Onua) so that the budget used to make them large sets could be put towards the summer wave.

We already got two waves of six small sets anyway, I’m content with that. What would people prefer: six small sets, six medium sized Toa with acceptably good designs and three large Toa and one medium villain in the winter wave and three poorly designed villains, another Ekimu, and one well designed 25$ villain in the summer wave or three or four small sets, six well designed medium Toa and a medium villain for the winter wave and six medium villains with reasonably good designs along with another Ekimu and large villain?

Do you think they will add Matoran to the line in 2017. Or will they generic them up by calling them villagers or something

to be frank I’m not really sure. we have gotten two different kinds of characters as small sets (villagers and animals) so far so we have two very different precedents to predict the future. More villagers or protectors are definitely a possibility though.

If you mean like sets or ploybags maybe, just maybe. Also villagers already have a name “Okotan”

They shall not reduce the budget for the Toa. I’m not saying this because I want it to be so, but it just can’t be. The arguably final form having less budget? Nah, I’d even like all Toa to be 20$ (No gold everywhere pls)

This version of Tahu shall be a solid gold brick.

Okay, so I just figured out how to post and I have a lot of thoughts about this topic that I will put into this one post. I will go over what is likely to happen, mixed with what I want to happen. So play that song that one guy posted, grab some popcorn and read this.

Winter Wave
Tahu Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Fire -20$

Kopaka Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Ice -20$

Onua Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Earth -20$

Lewa Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Jungle -15$

Gali Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Water -15$

Pohatu Lord (guardian, keeper, worrier, etc) of Stone -15%

Ok so I really like the idea of the protector sets being villains as it would make six to go against the six toa, however, they won’t be Bohrok as the Bionicle team confirmed that the Toa and Makuta would be the only returning characters. I think these villains would be in hard to make up for there size. So…

Fire Villain -10$

Ice Villain -10$

Earth Villain -10$

Jungle Villain -10$

Water Villian -10$

Stone Villain -10$

Than ,Of course, comes the Leading villain. I think this will be a smaller Makuta in maybe a photo body because we see him as a spirit of sorts in The Journey to One. Also in the first animation “The Legend” we see that when one puts on the mask they get larger. So the next question is his mask which I think will be the upper or lower half of the mask of time. Now hear me out please, I think that because we see the design for the upper half of the mask of time in Graphic Novel #2 and it looks very thought out and designed. that we are most definitely getting that piece. If you look at the bottom it does not fit the G1 Mask of time perfectly which makes me think a redesign is incoming and I think that this weaker Makuta could have one half and a set in the summer wave will have the lower half. So…

Makuta -25$

Summer Wave

Ok this is a lot of text so I’m gonna shorten this up. Eskimo will have the other half of the Mask of time and Makuta will have the mask of ultimate power, which gives him the larger body. As for Makuta’s slaves, I think they should be an evil version of the Toa, this allows for cool villains and corrupt masks.

Makuta Titan (whatever subtile works) -25$

Ekimu -15$

Shadow (or whatever) Tahu -15$

Shadow (or whatever) Kopaka -15$

Shadow (or whatever) Onua -15$

Finally, will bionicle continue past 2017
The short answer, there is not one sorry, it’s way to complicated.

Pros for Continuing

  1. Bionicle is definitely selling better thanHero Factory and that got 5 years. Proof for this is that more Bionicle fans are buying all the sets, and some are even coming out of retirement.

  2. It has so much potential and Lego knows that. Want proof, the netflix show. Of all the themes lego had to make a netflix show or even just show, they chose Bionicle. Only big themes get shows like Ninjago, Chima, and Nexo knights. Marvel would make so much more sense because there was already a Lego Marvel Netflix thing, with that ice minnie series or whatever.

  3. It is selling satisfactory at the least. We know for a fact that Bionicle is selling at least, OK.

Cons Against Bionicle continuing past 2017

  1. Lego only planned 3 years. Lego has three masks for all three years and most of the story is planned and there is no sign of a change to that plan.

  2. It’s not selling as well as Ninjago, for sure. Everyone loves Ninjago and it consistently sells well and I see kids buying the sets all the time.

Final Thoughts

Almost done. I’ll just say what I would like to happen if G2 continues. I want 6 new Toa except that I want one to be Takaknuva. I want to see a completely new villain, and I want a new large 3 year story arch. I know I said that the designers confirmed that there would be no other returning characters, but this would be a new story bible that would be written after that guy said that so he wouldn’t know about it it yet.

Ok, I’m done.

Guys, I’m not worried about 2017+. I think it will happen. HF wasn’t the hottest theme, you know, and it still had gotten 5 years. Does anyone want to see Bionicle end? No. Do we want to see another Stars again though? No. HF seemed popular enough at the time to keep it going. Also, In the recent years, non-licenced construction lines have never been short lived. G1 10 years, HF 5 years. I think Bionicle is going to last at least 5 years, and go the same route as HF. Lego knows how much the fans care about this theme, even in it’s dark years (2010-2014) having as much as a following as Ninjago or Chima. I don’t think Lego brought it back just to have it tossed to make the fans happy. The sets (Winter at least) DO have lot’s of effort put into them. It’s the advertising that will make the theme fail if it does. I just don’t want the reboot to go down in history as a fail either. I can picture a fan in 2020 saying, “oh remember g2 it sucked” Listen, I don’t know how much this means, but when I go to buy Bionicles I see people buying them all the time. I buy my Bionicles one at a time, so I can, I don’t know savor them or something? Because they won’t be around forever. I still don’t even own PoW, PoF, PoI, or LoSS. But I’m not going to wait until they get discontinued. And then people complain about G2’s story. Didn’t the story get much richer after 2003? And, the times have changed. Minifigure themes (and not just Star Wars) have grown in popularity, like Nexo Knights, Ninjago, and Chima when it was around. I see people buying Bionicle more then HF when it was around. My shelves are STILL trying to get rid of some Brain Attack sets at ~$5 or less clearance such as Jet Rocka, not to mention a full stock of EVERY IfB system set. And in my area IfB was the most popular wave, because it was System compatible! Meanwhile, all the Protectors and Masters are gone. Meanwhile, I hear about everyone talking about this clearance outbreak of Bionicle. I tried to search for it, and NO sets were on clearance where I live! I checked Target by the way. And WallMart has a ton of sets on shelves, I don’t know, I just think it’s doing well where I live. I think Bionicle will survive.

TL;DR: Constraction is never short, look at HF, I think G2 will last.
