BIONICLE Canon Contest #1: The First, Part 2 (Art)

Just gonna repost this here in case anyone’s looking for inspiration for the design of Helryx’s (or anyone else’s) mask.

So since I have no artistic talents, I’ma throw out my idea for anybody looking for inspiration for the mask portions of the Helryx, Artakha, and/or Tuyet contests, and if you wanna roll with it go for it:

I think there need to be more wide Kanohi. What do I mean by wide? Something along the lines of the Olmak, or the Garai, or Avak’s face, that stretch out further than an average Kanohi. We have plenty of Kanohi that are pretty straight and narrow, that line up well within a box. So I want to see something different, something that could fit within a rectangle or an oval. Why? Just to get some visual variety going on. Obviously though that’s only my thoughts on it, so if you wanna do something different go for it!

Some quick questions:

• If I provide more than the minimum 2 requested images, will they all be canonized? Or only the main 2, in which case I should indicate which two those are? The phrasing “minimum” infers that more than two images are allowed in an entry, but whether or not they would be canon is unclear.

• Is text allowed in the image? Can I submit both a text/no text version? (I’m not talking about text to “explain” an entry or such - it would be part of the artwork.)

• Are we allowed to depict other Bionicle characters in the artwork, so long as they already have established canon appearances that we’re not stepping on? (Say, Takanuva, for example). What about just an object (like a kanohi, or a toa stone?)

• Are there any limits as to what qualifies as 2D art? If (extreme example) someone literally traces an image of the MoC photo, but replaces the pakari with their own design, does that still count?

No. You can include more, but only the mask design and your final image will be sent for canonization.

Mostly if their background characters. The main issue I have with saying “Heck yeah, go for it” is if they become to much of a focus. The point is for Helryx. So you can, but it’s really gonna depend on how heavily they’re a part of the image.

My submission for the Helryx Art Canon Contest. As you can see it mostly inspired by comic style. In my eyes it’s the best way to show BIONICLE world in the 2006 - 2010 time period. Many fractions, many events, alternative universes… feels kinda ‘comic’ to me (since Greg Farshtey was a big fan of DC/Marvel iirc). [финал] Since Helryx is ‘proto-Toa’ I decided to connect her mask design with ‘ancient’ BIONICLE/Technic parts from early 00s. [image] Without text:

I like how you incorporated the background, using the beach (indicative of the Mata/Nuva), and the somewhat stormy looking skies (implying that this is a Toa-Hero not to be crossed).

Hey, I just wanted to say that I think we should have multiple winners for this Art portion, like how the Certavus Contest had 3 Art winners (I think 3 total winners is a good number personally). There were multiple depictions of some characters by different artists during G1’s run, I think showing some variety in that way would be good to replicate here

Yeah, differing mask designs is definitely a serious issue. Ideally the mask designs should all match, but perhaps there could be a note like “Helryx is depicted in this artwork with a non-canon Kanohi” or something, and the body design would still be the same. It just feels a shame otherwise really.

It could cause problems, since the goal of this contest is to make the mask that belongs to Helryx. If the 1st and 2nd have different masks, the second one can’t be a winner.

Perhaps a single “grand prize winner” and a few “runners up”, or whatever the term is?

Could work better for those whose masks we know, like nidhiki or Varian.
