BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

Ahh, I getcha now. More or less, though an exception has been made for dual-molded/marbled paint jobs, due to the unbiased nature of those “patterns.”

I have another question about the contests. In canon we see every Toa (besides the constructed ones) has this piece for their waist:
47306
Is this going to be a mandatory piece in every Toa contest besides Orde?

Also for anyone wondering, Nikila also has one:
Toa_Nikila
Edit: Krakua is the only exception, as he resembles an ancient Toa, ike Helryx or Orde

??? I don’t know why

Unless Greg says, “All Toa have that lower body,” there will be no reason for such rules to arise.

Also, Krakua and Takanuva also became Toa in Matoran, but they don’t have that lower bodies.

The thing is though, Takua and Krakua both became Toa based off of either the Toa Mata (specially built) or drawings of ancient Toa. Compared to the other Toa in canon, both Metru and Inika sized Toa have the same lower, with multiple of them coming from pre-Metru.

Also isn’t there also a quote that says most of the Toa are Inika and Metru style builds?

What is your canon basis for thinking this piece should be mandatory? You said it yourself that there are Toa who don’t use it.

And if it was mandated, why would Orde be an exception?

Not as far as I know.

And even if there was, “most” doesn’t mean “all”; any of the remaining Toa could be an exception.

I think it’s unnecessary, and perhaps a bit silly to implement that rule. In addition to what Rider and Jerm said, Lesovikk is older than the Toa Mata, and he has the pelvis piece. Therefore, that piece is not indicative of the time period a toa comes from.

plus, requiring that piece would essentially delete any possibility of having models with waist articulation :stuck_out_tongue:

And the Glatorian use it, so it’s not really even indicative of species.

Of course, the piece is probably stylized differently in-universe for Toa and Glatorian (kind of like how Helryx’s shins probably don’t look identical to a Nui-Jaga stinger), but that just makes the case for mandating it even weaker, since the same could also be said for any Toa in general; I highly doubt that every single Toa has an identical pelvis, despite the popularity of a specific piece in the sets.

I have doubts. If there were such rules, I think a lot of mocists would hate it. and the controversy over the contest will increase even more.

How much controversy was there over the Metru build last year?

and we’re not Lego. we don’t have to save money to make build

Orde is from the same time period as Tuyet, one of the first Toa. From what Krakua tells us, there was a time before this piece existed. Therefore it makes sense that one of the first Toa wouldn’t use this piece.

Yeah I misremembered the quote, it’s Mata and Metru. Slightly confused on how the specially made Mata become a widespread body type but that’s for another conversation.

As said above I misremembered a quote.

Second part, honestly I don’t care for waist articulation, since all of the figures we’ve gotten from the original run didn’t have it. That’s just me though

Yeah unless it was confirmed to be a part of the body underneath the armor, it wouldn’t make sense for it to be included as a mandate.

Probably a good idea not to make people madder then they already have been yeah.

And yeah it would also stops us from making characters who don’t have one of the colors that the lower torso was produced in.

Overall I’ve gotten the answer I needed “No that’s a really bad idea plus canon disagrees”. Thanks for the help and points everyone
(Also sorry for the wall of text, tried to answer asap but more kept pouring in)

I kind of just skimmed over this before, but… is he? I find it hard to believe (though not impossible) that he was transformed into a Toa in the couple of months (at most) between the creations of Helryx and the Toa Mata.

[EDIT: Apparently he was:

Also, I found a quote that relates to the recent conversation about mask variants:

Of course, this is somewhat complicated by the fact that the “Artakha-style” Hau is identical to the “Metru-style” Hau (suggesting that the styles are identical), but it’s still important that the Toa Metru’s masks are Metru-style.

At least, I guess Hau in Mata / Metru style is probably the same as Artakha style.
The reason is simple - We’ve already seen many Metru-Matorans wearing “Artakha style Hau” for over 20 years.
And many Matorans came to Mata Nui Island with their masks on.
In fact, many Mata-Matorans wear “Artakha style Hau”.

And this is canon and fact: Lhikan’s homeland was not Metru Nui, and he didn’t transformed into Toa in the city.

Here’s a bunch of quotes I collected based around the Huna, as that was the main mask we were discussing for variants earlier:

“6) Since Vakama and his companions had Matoran versions of their Great Masks, I’m assuming that other Matoran had those same designs, too. If that’s true, then does that mean that there are still Matoran on Mata Nui that have masks in the shape of a Great Huna, Great Rau, etc?
6) Possibly, yes”

“2. How did Vakama not know that his mask was a great Huna? He was a maskmaker so I assume he would have known many many mask styles. It was also not that uncommon of a mask as we see both Balta and Sarda wore great Hunas as Matoran. Could it just have been a foreign style of great Huna that Vakama happened to somehow acquire and the Metru Nui style great Huna is different looking?
2) He would have known Metru Nui style masks, not necessarily those of other places. That could have been a Huna originally acquired in trade.”
Chat with Greg Farshtey | Page 408

“1. I was browsing the BioSector 01 wiki, and I noticed that in the Kanohi page, it says “Kanohi can be in any shape or form, but throughout the BIONICLE world, mask makers have adopted specific shapes for certain powers”. So, for example, the Hau looks like it does simply because Matoran designed it that way. Is this true? 1) Yes. Same way a Stop sign could be a yellow triangle, but it’s always made a red octagon so people can recognize it immediately.
1a. If it is true, how does that explain the fact that when a Kanohi changes (as in, from Great to Noble), it gains the form of how it was meant to look like in its Noble form? For example, Vakama wore a great Huna as a Toa, which looked like it did because Matoran chose that shape. However, when it changed to noble, it looked like the way Matoran designed the noble Huna to look like. I know that’s a bit confusing - basically, how does a mask know what shape to take once it changes? Does it change based on what the person thinks it’s supposed to look like?
1a) Basically, yes, the same way that Jaller’s mask changed from Noble to Great in shape because Vakama gave it to him to honor Lhikan as a Toa, not a Turaga.
1b. If it does change based on that person’s memories and thoughts, how does that explain Lhikan’s Hau? Jaller was unconscious when Vakama placed Lhikan’s Hau on him, therefore he didn’t have any thoughts at the time. However, the mask still changed to what a normal Great Hau is supposed to like. How is that possible?
1b) Because it was influenced by Vakama, not Jaller. Jaller would have had no memory of what Lhikan’s mask looked like even if he had been awake.”

“4.) In the movie, Vakama has a Huna, of course, but Matoran’s Hunas in the movie look different, smaller. Obviously, they did this o kids could more easily tell the difference between Vakama and an verage background matoran. I KNOW that you weren’t involved in the movie, but is there at least a storyline answer? Are there different sizes of Huna or other Kanohi, or slightly different shapes?
There is no storyline reason that I know of. As you said, it was done for differentiation purposes in the movie, the same way the look of the Toa was changed for movie animation purposes.”
Official Greg Discussion | Page 18

“3) Once I asked you why there were no great huna matoran masks on mata nui aside from the fact that they weren’t designed yet way back in 2001. You said that there wasn’t time to make any great huna matoran masks. So basically, I’m wondering if there’s a new reason, since Vakama was wearing one as a matoran on metru nui.
3) Ah, but all that means is that Vakama at one time made himself one … he was a mask maker and could, after all. But since no one else was wearing one, obviously there had not been a Toa in Metru Nui to make that mask famous.”
Official Greg Discussion | Page 79

“10. See this image (sorry about the poor editing quality). Would Vakama as a Matoran look like 1 (maroon Matoran with a great huna with silver markings) or 2 (maroon Matoran with a noble Huna with silver markings)?
10) Vakama as a Matoran was shown in B2, so just look at that.”

“Hello, GregF.
It’s been mentioned multiple times in the books that the Toa Metru don’t know the powers of the masks they wear, and yet we see in the trailer for Legends of Metru-Nui that they are already wearing the same masks (albeit powerless, as they are matoran masks).
Now, my first inclination is to believe that the don’t know the powers of any mask–they just make the shapes. But in Mystery of Metru-Nui, Vakama finds a quote “Mask of Shielding” that Nuhrii crafted in the Reclamnation Yard.
So, if Vakama already knew what powers a Hau held…why wouldn’t know the powers of a Huna or Komau or Ruru, consdiering we know these masks are already in existance?
This has been bugging me for some time and I would greatly appreciate an answer. :)thanks:
Very good question :)And I even have a very good answer for a change, lol. Vakama naturally knows what a Hau does, because Lhikan wears one so he has seen it in action.
Greg
Ahh, I see. I didn’t consider that.
So then, does this mean that mean that they know what a Hau and Kiril do, but not say, a Kaukau or a Kakama?
Quite possibly.
Thanks. :)”
Official Greg Discussion | Page 45

“10. Why didn’t Vakama recognize the Toa Metru masks and their corresponding powers if he was such a great mask maker?
ANSWER: Vakama was a very skilled mask maker, but he had made very few Great Masks at the beginning of LOMN. After all, with only one Toa in the city, how many Great Masks would be needed?”
Official Greg Discussion | Page 81

“4b. On that note, the Toa Metru masks were not only warn by them, right? (Meaning, there were more Matoran that wore the Huna than just Vakama, etc.)?
4b) Yes”
Official Greg Dialogue | Page 231

Basically the answer is: Well it’s a regional variant he got through trade, but also Vakama made it, but also he made only one BUT also he was a new mask maker and hadn’t made many masks before. Or Vakama got a foreign disc, made a mask and wore it because he thought it looked cool.

As for the Artahka Hau, we know he took in Matoran so maybe he brought some of the mask makers from Metru Nui? Additionally, Onua’s mask is thinner than other Pakari, so maybe there’s other minute differences that make them slightly different?
Also maybe the difference is one has an pin and the other a peg?

according to the bs01 article on the Toa Cordak, the team was formed shortly before the creation of the mata

Did you mean to say Helryx?

yeah, I’m fine without it too, but I think it’s a nice feature when it’s included

Yeah my bad  Always manage to mix the 2 up.

Yeah, I just found the source for that:

I suppose the Toa Mata could have awakened just before the Toa Cordak were formed (because their awakening was “approximately” that time), but it’s close enough that the original point is still made:

Lesovikk was almost certainly a Toa before the Toa Mata awoke.

Ttv have made it clear they will only be enforcing build restrictions based on specific canon statements from Greg, so questions like this are pointless.

I don’t agree that just because something’s pointless to ask about, that you shouldn’t ask it. Questions could unveil a quote that we’ve forgotten about or a new interpretation. Like was it pointless to ask about if Vakama’s mask was a variant, since we’ll never see the Metru variant? After all, Naho doesn’t wear a Metru Huna so it will never exist in media.

This question came from nowhere and lead to nothing. There was no reason to think that the pelvis would or should be mandated, and nobody’s ever found a quote pertaining to its potentially universal nature (Helryx, the Toa Mata, and Krakua don’t have it, so it’s not universal anyway). If you believe there might be a relevant Greg quote, find it yourself. To quote a certain librarian: that was a complete waste of time.

Yes. We’ve only ever seen the one version of the mask, and it’s the standard version, so any others people make would have to be canonized as variants or even similar masks.

I’m kinda lost. Why started the discussion about Vakama wearing a regional variant? Did Naho wear a Huna?

Yes, her mask was determined by a bzp poll, similar to the Toa Mangai of ice.
