I think something to note is that something can be bad and still inspire good things.
To pick an example, there are a huge amount of video essays on Youtube that are effectively rewriting the last two seasons of Game of Thrones. Most of them are very good and very well-handled and thought out.
They do not mean that the seasons in question are good. People can make great work using something objectively bad as an inspiration.
A good deal of Hoseryx art is great. Does that mean the MOC itself is good? No, it doesnât.
You realize that due to the requirements to even be able to vote any random user on that site would have to actually care about this contest enough to contribute. People who use 4chan could have also grown up with the toyline, man. Thatâs not impossible. Unless you can provide receipts of new users saying theyâre from 4chan and voted for #6 and donât even know what a Bionicle is, you donât have anything. I reiterate that the opposing side was already caught making dupe accounts as well so for all we know there was brigading amongst circles to bump votes for #2 up and many of those themselves could be ânon fansâ.
4chan is notorious for raiding and doing stuff just to piss people off or have a laugh. They really wouldnât have to care much about the theme at all. And I am sure there are a lot of people on there who used to be fans of BIONICLE, maybe the earlier years. Itâs not hard to believe it had no bearing at all for me. At least a little.
You proof so far is screenshots of people campaigning for #6 on 4chan and one lesser known artist pushing a bribe within his niche circle. You cannot prove to any of us which voters were arriving from either, and if the former, whether or not they are bad faith actors.
Right, but if given a choice (like voting in a poll), many would prefer to not have something they consider bad as part of the canon.
And everyone, please just calm down a bit. We donât know the results yet, but itâs out of our control. Always remember that as Bionicle fans, we bring many different values to the table, of what the franchise means to us. Itâs no use getting upset or angry just because others donât hold those same values that we do. Would I prefer 2 to win? Yes, I genuinely love the model. Is it really the end of the world if 6 wins? Certainly not; as Arcan said, something bad can be used as inspiration for something better.
You say that but 4chan iirc nowadays has a staunch ânot your personal armyâ culture. If we were talking maybe back in the 2000âs Iâd agree but times have changed there from what Iâve seen. Anyone who didnât care enough would have likely told those pushing the contest to go away.
âYeah, heâs the worst! I hate that 4-Chan guy!â
âWell, your side is still worse because I donât like it!â
Just stop it.
Results will be posted hopefully on the 6th (Waiting for word back as part of our vetting). Until then, if I see anymore accusations that one side or the other has done X, Y, or Z thing and that theyâre terrible for it, or that theyâre not a good BIONICLE fan for it, then whoever is saying that will be suspended until after the contest is over.
Iâm going to sleep now. Anymore people engaging in this activity after this post has been made will be subject to suspension. This is your final warning on this matter.
I mean I was just commenting on what Risebell proposed. If we are gonna show all the fan art to him just to get some context to it we should also mention why it got so popular and how those fan arts came to be. If that feels unfair too you then Iâm to no help too you
The way you worded it sounded different at first, but it sounds sensible when you put it that way. I thought you were referring to giving that explaination while presenting the moc itself, not the art, if that clarifies where I misread you.
I might be mistaken, but I believe that the artwork is the mask design portion? As in, the artists have freedom to draw any mask design they would like, and then the winning art, mask included, would become the canon depiction.
To be honest Iâm just glad the community has something to talk about now. As controversial as this has been weâve been a lot more active as a result.
Iâm with you there. Itâs just fun to have something to do these days.
On another note, Iâm actually kinda glad that the mocs are merely serving as inspiration for the actual canon artwork. Artistic interpretations of bionicle characters have always been one of my favorite parts of the theme, and I often like to imagine those as ârealisticâ depictions anyway. Also, one of the best mocs Iâve ever seen was when recently someone built Toa Nikila (maybe not spelled right) as accurately as possible by basing it off of the official artwork, and Iâm excited to see the revamps that could come from all of these contests. If Hoseryx inspires some genuinely cool art (and it already has) that feels like it fits the character, it really doesnât matter if the moc looks ridiculous, because the actual canon image will be awesome.
