Aaaaaand … here we go again.
Ohhh interesting. In that case, I do hope whatever wins that poll, it’s not Marendar cuz I still have to buy pieces for him lol
I assume artakha is still going to be up considering that’s what people thought would be next. Those people that wanted to build artakha are probably done or close to done by now, so it would suck for those guys who already finished. But, eh, who knows
Just wanna throw my unsolicited hat in here to say that I think, all uncontrollable things considered, this first contest went great! It is really energized the community in a way I haven’t seen since G1 was alive and well, and I’m very much looking forward to the future contests, which will only get smoother as they go on. People who are butthurt about the results are entitled to their feelings, but suggestions to cancel future contests are honestly asinine. If you don’t like the winner, have your own headcanon! It’s all make-believe anyway, and this is a great way for the community to come together and get active on a communal project. You’re doing a great job Eljay, don’t let the haters get to you!
Well I don’t feel like digging through the whole site to find those comments, on top of my head I know there was this one, there were also similar ones made on other websites, /biog/ for example. Given the nature of 4chan I can’t really find them now. But if they weren’t there I wouldn’t be bringing this up now ![]()
Also, I feel like we dwell way too much on this Makuta-thing. I think that, on its own, it wasn’t really that big of an issue - it’s just that, combined with other small issues that I listed in one of my previous posts, it created a bigger issue with the whole contest, at least in my opinion.
Are people who dare to criticize TTV considered “haters” now? Please…
Moderately off-topic, but does anyone know of any other canonical characters who had cut parts?
@Eljay This might have already been addressed or someone else has asked it, but regarding characters in the contest that don’t have an official kanohi, like Orde and Zaria, how will their contests be conducted?
It is very likely that their contests will also be used to decide their mask power and appearance. The only difference to the others’ is that they are already known what their mask powers are, just not their canonical model. So the contests for these two characters will have a lot more artistic freedom.
Meso suggested leaving their powers unknown iirc, which I don’t mind at all. Otherwise, there’s the risk of people voting for masks they like or ignoring the mask powers. I already have masks in mind for them, the Sanok for Orde and the mask of adaptation for Zaria, which I intend to stick with regardless of how the contests go. It might be easier for people to vote if the masks are treated as unknown while maintaining the shape of X mask. Besides, Norik and Krakua’s mask appearances differ from their actual powers.
Yes, but Norik and Krakua are special cases. Norik’s mask is meant to be designed in the shape of a previous hero’s mask, and Krakua’s mask didn’t exist when the entry came around. Of course, this doesn’t mean the same can’t be said for Orde and Zaria, but they are unspecified to be so if that is the case.
Indeed they are special cases, but there’s still a precedent set by them and the rest of the Toa Hagah. And Krakua’s mask hasn’t been changed to look like a Suletu rather than a Hau afaik. I just think it would be easier for people to vote if the powers were left unknown rather than decide between picking a mask power or ignoring part of what’s going to be canonized, which would bring into question the point of canonizing that part if not enough people are basing their votes on it.
I know, I would love to see a canonization of the inorganic Inika masks which would allow Krakua’s mask to be swapped out properly on source media material. But we’ve already got stuff going right now, so this idea should be saved for a later date.
Side note: However, we probably will be able to canonize an inorganic Calix with Varian, as well with the Sanok if your idea persists through the canonization process.
Hopefully a decent looking inorganic Suletu. The ones I’ve seen are ugly and it seems the design is hard to salvage. I’m looking forward to an inorganic Calix design for Varian and I hope the winning entry takes quite a few liberties rather than just being a blue and gold Toa Hagah, as much as I like the metru build.
I think it’s worth noting that there is no distinct “Makuta build” as far as sets go. Individual makuta are just as diverse as toa.
It is very likely that their contests will also be used to decide their mask power and appearance.

I don’t know if this possibility has been suggested before (and it might be impractical, as it would require another poll in addition to the contest), but perhaps we could hold a community vote before the contests for Toa like Orde and Zaria, whose masks are unknown, allowing the community to choose from the list of Toa-approved Kanohi which one they would most like to see the characters wearing.
Of course, this might prove difficult because there are a large number of Kanohi to begin with, meaning that there likely wouldn’t be a real majority if everyone votes for different masks…but it’s an idea.
An additional possibility would be to ask Greg before the contests if he envisioned any specific masks for these Toa, so the mask portion would have less impact on the debate.
I think leaving their powers unknown or determining them in advance are the best options. You could still use a kanohi of a different shape if you like, which has been the case for the Norik, Krakua and potentially the rest of the Toa Hagah.
Afaik Greg never gave Orde and Zaria their mask powers.
I think their mask powers should stay unknown.
I agree that those are the best options: of the two, I’m more in favor of determining them in advance, because I’m not overly fond of canonizing the appearance of a Toa whose mask shape and power are left arbitrary. That, to me, would just create unnecessary confusion, and that might even necessitate a further contest to determine the power of a new mask.
Not to mention that, despite the possible impracticality of choosing a mask before the contest, allowing the community to do so only enhances the community’s involvement in the creation of the character’s appearance, rather than making it a purely individual choice.
Well, this is kinda good question about masks and their powers. If a charater has totally unkown mask then there are those variants, I think:
- No art contest (the worst one)
- Art contest happens but:
a) Mask power is defined before it (thus it might happen that all the arts have same mask)
b) Mask power is unknown (all the entries will have unkown, new masks)
c) Every artist decides him/herself (either new mask (with new power) or an already existing one)
So a question to the Cast: how contests for characters without defined mask powers will be held? Will it be decided when we run into such contest or right now?
Would it be okay for artists to reuse their mask designs for these contests? And while we’re at it, would Orde look similar to Helryx since he’s around her age?
Every being in the Matoran Universe is around her age.
