BIONICLE G1 Canon Contests Discussion & Questions

To expand upon this question - can we change the mask colour? Mask design is obviously a critical component of the art portion - it would be a bit odd to make it restricted to whatever colour the winning entry’s mask is (especially for something like Artakha’s mask, which I imagine some people may want to apply multiple colours to).

Additionally, if the winning entry has a cape (or other fabric), would ours be able to add a decorative pattern or design onto it in the art (say, for example, the UDD symbol)? Or must it be a monochrome piece of fabric?
I would imagine some of this would fall under the same rules as adding the “decorative runes” described for the armour, or wear/damage like many of the Helryx entries did, so I’d be surprised if it’s disallowed.

I have been told by Eljay and Mesonak on separate occasions that the mask CAN be recoloured. If the MOC winner has a silver mask, the Art portion could recolour it to be gold, for example.

No idea about the fabric, but I don’t think it’s as easy as you are making it out to be. With the runes, or battle damage, those are small details that cannot really be reproduced with Lego, and their appearance in the Art can be taken as something that is implied to be on the model.

But a large decal on a cape is a major enough detail that its inclusion may be considered as too far from the model.

That being said, MOCs were not allowed to include such details, so I think they should be allowed in the Art to give the option for Artakha to have such a detail.

About Toa Hagah, I think that one of the rules for them, should be that their main build must be based on Toa Metru build. As it would be super strange if we had Norik and Iruini with Metru build, and for example won Bomonga that would have some exotic build, looking like Toa Mahri or something.

I think it should just be for the masks, armour, and weapons. (with all of them being metru builds obviously)

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it said about Hagah builds that that was the case, they had to be based on Metru, I can’t find the when though. What I’m curious on is the art portion, will it be a group picture? Could it include Iruni and Norik, so as to make canon a full picture of the Hagah? I feel like the wiki would appreciate that, but we’d likely need extra drawing time.

I remember the oposite, that some said that the Hagah not necesary should have a Metru build because they come from different regions, so it would make sense that their previous form before been Hagah were not Metru.

I personally prefer all to be Metru, having a more coesive look. I think that when the received their new armor, wasn’t just a plate in the chest, but a complete rebuild, like the Toa Nuva with their adaptative armor.

One way to make them not Metru, but still make sense, is build them in pairs. Norik and Iruini have the same build, Gaaki and Bomonga have the same build and Pouks and Kualus the same, or somthing like that.

But is there any info where each toa Hagah comes from specifically?

I think that more than it is similar to the other toa, it should be understood that they come from the same specific line, in this case from 2004-2005, so that putting them next to other characters is not strange to say the least, for example the toa Mahri have a varied design but due to their combination of colors and certain similarities in design, they create a familiarity in the equipment (breathing tubes, visors and how they are built).

To this end, I’m curious if similar to the final Helryx art also having a separate image having the mask, should we have the final hagah art have one with each individually, and in the full group shot? I say this mostly so the BS01 page for the Hagah would be in-line with the pages for other Toa Teams showing the whole group?

Guess it gets complicated, and into another issue - would the 4 winning mocs have to be each drawn separately by the same artist? Or could one artist enter just Pouks, and another just Kualus? Food for thought.

To my knowlage is never stated where come from each Toa Hagah, but I assume that all of them come from a different region and from a different team.

And I agree that the Hagah should have the same stetic to show them as a Team. The only team that I wouldn’t bother if they were differents would be the Toa Mangai, since we only have seen one of its members as a Toa, and none come from Metru Nui

I think it would be interesting that after the final results of the Toa Hagah contest, an illustration could be made with a style similar to that seen in the comics

I could see MOCists changing the arms as well.

However, I would prefer if they all had the same arms (Metru arms piece), and two different leg variants (Vahki legs/Rahkshi legs).

But not even Norik and Iruini had the Metru arms, or Metru legs. (Upper and lower, at least. They did still have the upper and lower limbs, if that’s what you meant.)

As for the Art discussion, here’s how I’d do it:

Each character gets their own MOC Contest, as planned. Then, each character gets their own Art Contest, all run at the same time, also as planned.

Where my idea comes in is that you would then run a fifth simultaneous Art Contest for a group shot including Norik and Iruini. This has many benefits; Each character gets their own BS01 headline piece, the Toa Hagah get a headline piece, and we, the fans, get multiple artistic interpretations of each character.

EDIT: Hold on a second, if the individual and group contests are run at the same time, the masks won’t be the same.

Either the group shot has to be done after the individual contests, or the mask shapes get decided before the Art.

Might I suggest just saying that the mask on the MOC winner is the official shape? If it has a custom mask, then that is the canon shape of that mask. If it’s a pre existing mask, then that team member has a mask shaped like that pre-existing mask.

Pouks will not need an art contest because we know how the Mask of Emulation looks like

We actually don’t know the shape of Pouks’s mask. The Toa Hagah masks may or may not be in the correct shape of the masks, as shown by Norik.

Plus, even if we were to decide that Pouks has a ‘correct’ Mask of Emulation, we would still need an Art Contest because BS01 doesn’t want 3d-printed parts in the headline image.

I’m not sure why people expect a team picture for the Toa Hagah. Also the Toa Hagah’s builds have already been established in canon to be metru builds and have since been mandated by TTV, so I don’t see the point in bringing it up again.

The mask of creation can be changed to any color afaik, although I’m sure there will be at least some predisposition amongst voters to sticking with the color from the moc contest.

Questions (sorry, if they are already answered or stupid): will Toa Hagah have restriction about being only Metru builds? Or they can be any? I know it is too early for them right now, so you can ignore this one.
Additionaly: what is Metru build exactly? The torso part? Arms without articulation in shoulders? Both of those?

I’m pretty sure that Metru builds will be required. I don’t know exactly what that means, though.

Probably just the torso, as long as the limbs are similar to existing builds.

Just look at Norik and Iruini. They have different shins, different forearms, and different shoulder armour from each other, as well as the Toa Metru. You could also switch up the thighs and the feet while still having it recognizable as a Metru build.

And I know people have come up with techniques to give the builds shoulder articulation while still matching the profile, so I would hope that that is allowed.

Actually we do know what the mask of emulation looks like.

Ya, but with the Hagah, there is the option to use any mask and say it is a reshaped one, or to use what we know. We have a precedent for both, with Norik having a Pehuki shaped like a Noble Kiril, while Iruini has a standard Qualsi. Ideally it would be nice to get official looks for the 4 masks, but its far from required.

That’s the point that @The_Blue_Panda was making.

But it’s irrelevant, since the Hagah masks may or may not be in the correct shape of the masks.

@Solaris_Magnus

The best way to do it would be to only give Bomonga, Gaaki, and Kualus the true shapes of the masks, which gives us official appearances for their masks.

Then, for Pouks, give him a custom mask and say that it’s in the shape of a Pehkui.

Then we have the official appearances for all six Hagah masks.
