Hey. I mostly visit the boards on my tablet, but every now and then I also do it on my laptop. Today when I tried that, both browsers were logged out and showed me an error message that they’re unsupported - but they’re both the latest available version.
When I visit the “your browser is unsupported” link, it leads to page which says that at least Firefox should work. The “switch to a supported browser” link leads to a different page that also suggests Firefox. Again, the latest available version for both browsers is installed.
I never encountered that before, but I’m on my Chromebook, and it works fine on Chrome, you could get another browser or email your browser’s parent company to asked of what is going on.
Ok, that definitely explains why it isn’t working. Microsoft itself stopped supporting Windows XP a full decade ago. What kind of computer are you running it on? You may be able to upgrade to Windows 7, Vista, or 10, each of which should let you run the site correctly.
Maybe, but it’s very easy to hack nowadays (and due to being unsupported, Microsoft won’t do anything about it if you are hacked while using any unsupported version of Windows). It did look pretty nice though. Too bad they can’t at least add a skinning option for newer versions.
As a Cybersecurity major, I can tell you this isn’t actually true. It’s somewhat overblown what Windows security updates offer you. Normally it’s just patches for vulnerabilities that Microsoft themselves created. A lot of security measures you can take actually rely on 2 things.
Know what you’re clicking on.
Secure your router. Make sure a firewall is running.
Security wise it’s no less safe to run XP than it is to run Windows 11. Microsoft and Apple both exaggerate the “danger” of running old OS’s because it convinces people to buy more products. It’s pure koolaid.
@Bioman You don’t need a new OS, what you need is a new browser. From what I found from some brief research, you should look into the Supermium browser.
The browser itself leaves a pretty good impression too. Works fast and does all the things I’d want to do with it.
About security, I barely ever go online with my laptop. And if I do, it’s just a few, reputable websites (this, youtube, wikipedia, honestly not much more), but most of the time it isn’t even connected to the web. Router is safe.
Thanks again.
Also make sure that no one else has access to system files on the PC, or they can use a known trick to reset passwords even if the device is locked (my brother did this on a Windows 10 desktop).
To be fair, this was the kind of security issues I was thinking of- the ones that require physically accessing the computer. You are correct in your statements that the online risks aren’t particularly bad for any major OS.
