What are your favorite Cosplayer’s Maybe that you follow or that you have meet? Make sure that you leave there @ if you know/remember it.

Does cosplay count if it’s one of your RPCs? Eh, this is the closest relevant topic.

Explanation of the character can be found in that quote, but the short version is that they’re a Robin Hood meets Lone Ranger and uses an oversized top hat as their mask. Hence the moniker of the Topper Bandit.

This is the second time I’ve been to a comic convention and decided to dress up this go around. Seemed like it would make the event more fun. I didn’t have a lot of time to put together a costume and Topper Bandit seemed like the easiest to do semi-accurately on a short notice.

Yes, I could see out of it and well enough to navigate the space. Hearing and being heard, however, was another matter entirely. I was so worried about sight, I forgot to consider what affect it would have on my hearing and speaking. That might be faux suede, satin ribbon, wire, and poster board, but it might as well have been a five gallon bucket over my head as far as sound was concerned.

Great now it’s a guessing game :unamused:

How many other people in costume were there?

There were a good number of people in costume, despite it being the last day. I’m not certain what the percentage I would give it, at least for anything accurate, but it felt like around 70% were in costume. I was with a group of four others who also were all in costume. One Jason Todd/Red Hood, one MCU Winter Soldier, one MCU Star Lord, and one of the knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though I’m blanking on which knight specifically.

I had counted about a dozen unique Freddy Krueger’s before I gave up keeping track. Evidently, the actor was there so a ton of people where dressed as him to varying degrees. But there was a lot of variety. From simple Halloween costumes to the meticulously designed foam suits of Warhammer 40K marines - massive franchises like Star Wars with movie accurate and functioning BB-8 drones to some internet indie animation like V from Murder Drones to old timers like the Green Hornet.

The prior one I had been to didn’t have as many people in costume, but it was a smaller convention. In comparison, there was a lot of Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss cosplayers there and almost none at the second. Also a lot more anime cosplayers at the first and not as many in the second. Demon Slayer was still the most popular at both. . . Also, a lot of Furries. So many Furries. Especially 14-years-old or younger at this second one.

I’m going to assume six months is enough time to post again. If not, just let me know if I should merge this.

Now that I have a taste, I wanted to try something more. I couldn’t decide on what I wanted to do next for awhile, but then the Animation VERSUS Kickstarter happened. I’ve been a big fan of Alan Becker and his series and have been following it since I found the original trilogy on YouTube. With all the hype, I decided to do one of the stick figure characters from that series, going as Agent.

For some reason, the photo taken during suit testing in the basement ended up being some of the better photos

And here’s a timestamp for him in action:

Figured Agent would be both the easiest to make a costume for and be somewhat recognizable. At least as a stick figure if nothing else. Technically, any member of the color gang would be easier to do but harder to recognize as stick figures. And any of the hollow heads (The Chosen One, The Dark Lord, Victim, The Second Coming/Orange), would require a lot more work on account that their heads are holes.

And here are some videos of me walking in the suit.

If I wear this again, I need to make a lot more improvements. Like better ventilation and cooling. Aside from the head, the suit is entirely made of 8mm EVA foam that is then covered in a custom spandex suit. I knew going in that foam would retain body heat and it would get warm, but I didn’t account for all moisture also being trapped inside. Lasted for a total of close to four hours before deciding to retire the costume for the day, wash up, and change clothes.

ah yes, CGP Grey (the C stands for Cosplay)

how long do you estimate this took to make?

I thought so many people would mistake me for CGP Grey while there, but not a single person did. Most recognized I was a stick figure and that was it. Couldn’t place it anywhere else.

As for how long, not including research and obtaining the materials but including prototypes…~50 hours?

The spandex suit over the foam, which was helpfully put together by my sister as I’m just starting to figure out sowing, was about ten hours. The limbs and portion around the head were simple enclosed socks, but figuring out the torso, connecting the limbs, and experimenting took a bit. That and I only had enough material on everything to do it once, so a lot of cautious efforts.

The head, which is an outdoor lamp cover, took about 7 hours. I could have shaved that time in half if I remembered we had hole saws rather than using normal drills and then sanding down that Swiss cheese with a Dremel. . . And also if the wind wasn’t so bad this year and requiring me to sand a good chunk of the spray paint off to fix the runs and smudges. At least the outline around the head and glasses went smooth and quick.

The foam suit is what took up most of the time. I had enough thin spare foam to at least somewhat figure out the torso piece. Everything else I just had to measure a lot and hopefully cut once…And then make adjustments. And my design method changing a good degree which later affected other portions that I forgot would be relying on stuff existing there for stability. Ended up being more complicated that I thought for just a series of tubes.

I’m currently getting started on painting my ODST helmet, does anyone have suggestions for paints to use? I already have primer, but I’d love to have some advice on what paints to use for the black base color (and if there’s any paint markers I could use for details).
