Cronk rates the Entire MCU theatrical releases (up until Endgame) day by day

Decided I wanted to give these movies a second look after reading more comics over the years, to see how well they hold up overtime, and to see if my opinions have changed. So I’ve been going through the movies every day in order to rate them.

DAY 1 - Iron Man (2008)

First up was Iron Man (2008) obviously. This is still my favorite MCU film. It’s a great adaption of the source material, carefully sets up it’s universe and the plot is really good. RDJr was also a fantastic casting choice as we all know.

Stane isn’t the best adaption, but I don’t understand why people thought he was a weak villain. Jeff Bridges giving an understated menace is actually good, it comes across as conniving. I suppose after the menace of the Raimi Spider-Man villains, people expected that. But for the sake of Bridge’s performance, I think he actually played the part right and then some. Especially since many of the late-70s and 80s Iron Man villains started bending toward the corporate espionage route, which this films portrays.

This movie also has a fantastic adaption of Iron Man’s origin, which, besides the change from Vietnam to Afghanistan, is like the Raimi Spider-Man films a 1-to-1 adaption of the comic book.

The only flaws I have to give this film is sometimes weird editing and also the fact that some of the CGI hasn’t held up as good as I remembered. There are times it looks great, and other times it looks like they clearly superimposed the armor on RDJ’s arms. Lol.

In terms of comic book films, this is one of the greatest. And in terms of being an Iron Man comic fan, it’s a really good adaption.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

DAY 2 - The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Yeah I still don’t care much for this one. It felt like a response to embarrassment of the 2003 Hulk film, and still comes across that way. I don’t care for how the Hulk looks super grungy, I hate the color grading, and I dislike how they went with Hulk’s ultimate universe origin.

The heroicness of Banner was him saving someone else from being taken in by the gamma radiation. Instead, it’s a voluntary test here for radiation resistance, turning out to be about the super soldier serum. I hate the trope of turning powers into a weapon, I know it wasn’t used much during this movie, but it’s never been a trope I felt was ever done right.

In general, I feel like we don’t see the alternate personality of the Hulk shine through much in this movie. Bruce Banner is definitely at his best in this movie, however. Norton’s one-off portrayal is fantastic, he is sympathetic and very intelligent.

I am also not a fan of General Ross in this one. Unlike the comics, 90s cartoon, and even the 2003 film, Ross is not someone trying to detain the Hulk because he thinks it’s *right*, but because he’s covering up his own mistakes. He is more of a villain sure, but I feel like he was better as an anti-villain in the comic books. He is also just terrible to his daughter, which feels so contrary to his portrayal in all other adaptions.

The real villain that shines here is Blonski/Abomination. I like his growing lust for power. It’s the best part of the movie for me.

CGI hasn’t held up the best, but not surprised by that. I just cannot find myself enjoying this adaption. I am going to get flack for this, but I much prefer how Hulk was portrayed later in The Avengers.

Rating: 3/5 Stars

DAY 3 - Iron Man 2 (2010)

Curiously, there was a 1-year pause in releases for the MCU films, a rarity in the past 18 years. They should have done that more. This is the first film in this series where I have seen contentious views on it.

It introduced a lot to the MCU world building, like more stuff with SHIELD, the hint at Captain America, as well as the elusive Black Widow who was at her best in this release.

I don’t have much to say plot wise. It’s an OK plot. It’s an adaption of Justin Hammer’s storyline in the late 70s of Iron Man comics, while they combined the characters of Blacklash and Crimson Dynamo into the character of Whiplash. Both villains are entertaining, but Justin Hammer steals the show as a complete jerkwad.

I don’t care for Don Cheadle’s role as War Machine, he doesn’t come across as a military man to me like how the previous actor was in the first film. I also refuse to believe the kid Iron Man saves is Peter Parker, sorry, that was always a dumb fan theory/retcon.

Action wise, the finale is meh. The best set piece in the movie was the battle in Monaco against Whiplash. Otherwise, I wasn’t really feeling much tension in the last act like you did in Iron Man 1 where Tony is absolutely on his last legs against Iron Monger. Overall, OK flick. Inoffensive, though not as good as the first.

I will continue posting updates, but what do you guys think?

wrong its, unsubscribing

You’re making me want to find these on DVD. I saw bits and pieces of a few of them on cable, and I know especially that Iron Man is considered all around pretty good.

My family thinks I’m odd because I was a big MCU fan and they are surprised I don’t watch the movies anymore. I have to remind them I am only a fan of good superhero stuff. As for Doomsday, there’s been no build up. They are rushing their plans and it’s gonna be a disaster.

As I said in the review, it’s one of the few adaptions of a comic book that really gets it right. That, and it has a tight script and plot, and the acting is phenomenal. It’s worth getting on DVD. Iron Man would be a good movie even disconnected from the whole of the MCU.

DAY 4 - Thor (2011)

Thor (2011) was next. I’ll be honest, besides the obnoxious amount of dutch angles, I really don’t understand why people thought this was the weakest entry in the first phase when Incredible Hulk exists. It gets the character of Thor better, sticking mostly with his origin story of humiliation and redemption. I adore the visuals for Asgard, even if it is all CGI, it looks extremely cool and I’m sad they destroyed all of it in Thor 3.

I think the majority of audiences were wrong about this when the film came out. They all acted like Thor was lame and the movie was boring. The wrong lessons were taken for listening to audiences here, which utterly ruined the character past phase 2. They should have listened to fans of the actual Thor comics, who enjoyed the movie. The appeal of Thor is for them, after all, right?

It doesn’t have a lot of huge action pieces, but that wasn’t the point. It’s not a boring movie whatsoever. The film is merely character driven, with Thor’s redemption being the main point. He is always heroic, but he changes from an arrogant and thick-headed heroism to truly understanding it’s about selflessness.

The best part of this movie is Chris Hemsworth as Thor, it was a great casting choice. Tom Hiddleson is great as Loki here too, though I feel like he really shines later in The Avengers. His plan, however, doesn’t make sense. He wants to kill the frost giants to impress Odin as he is asleep and boost himself into becoming the proper heir, but Odin is already omniscient even when sleeping, so who was he going to fool? Odin would be aware of his plans of trying to murder Thor, as he sees what happens on Earth in the film and cries when Thor nearly dies.

Hawkeye shows up, I guess. He doesn’t even fire an arrow. Unlike Black Widow in Iron Man 2, he has nothing to do here. Clearly was there for set up, nothing more. I think he could have been involved in the action scene more with Thor infiltrating the SHIELD camp.

I do miss the comic element of Thor being a mortal doctor and Jane as a nurse, but for the sake of MCU I’ll be ok with their change in order to build up to the Avenger’s plot device of the cosmic cube and inter-dimensional travel and using Thor to explain that was a good choice.

The score is the weak point of this movie. I can barely remember it.

Still don’t like the whole “magic is advanced science” thing though. That’s lame.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars, too many dutch angles.

DAY 5 - Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) today. Usually this is a 4th of July tradition for me to watch it. Upon rewatch, I can definitely see it’s flaws a little clearer, such as wonky editing and the CGI is weird. Still, plot wise, I really like this one.

Evans is amazing as Captain America. He plays the role straight which I appreciate instead of trying to make him some brooding character we get in later superhero movies. His optimism and courage is on full display. Glad this was his more prominent superhero role, and he only gets better from here on out.

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull was really good. A little corny, but I imagine that’s what they were going for. And even with the corniness, he still has a very great menace to him, especially with how over the top he is. It’s the right sort of character for this kind of film.

I think Captain America and Peggy Carter is the best romance in the series up to this point, I buy their chemistry a lot more than Stark and Pepper.

Some clear flaws: the CGI is wonky at times, so is the editing. Music, however, is awesome. Love the score for this flick.

Once again, don’t understand audience consensus at the time of this one being “boring”. They were still being experimental at this time, leaning into different genres, and this one tried to be a period piece that leaned into the action/adventure tropes. I think the audiences didn’t realize the corniness was the point; after all, the original Captain America comics are WAY cornier. It’s true to the source material.

I appreciate how this one doesn’t feel the need to set up the other movies until the very end, which makes the title a bit misleading. It’s good as a stand-alone ignoring the prologue and epilogue of the film.

It’s my second favorite in Phase 1. 4/5 stars.

I love this movie! Definitely in my top 3 Marvel movies. I really like how a theme started in this movie is Hydra’s vehicles being modded versions of real-life ones (Captain America: The First Avenger features modern-day US APCs with plasma cannons along with several fictional Hydra vehicles, and later movies featuring Hydra have them using a Russian MBT with a plasma cannon along with other modded Soviet tech).

DAY 6 - The Avengers (2012)

The Avengers is as good as I remember. Everything works here, the ensemble cast, the score, the pacing, the plot is tightly done and easy to follow. Great action set pieces. They also are unashamed of the sillier parts of the Marvel lore like the absolutely impossible Helicarrier, and they introduce aliens into the world here.

CGI has also aged really well. There is a lot of it in this movie, but they had time to polish it and blended it with practical effects and sets so it was still rather believable.

What also really makes this movie exceptional is that it pays off all the other films before it, and then some. Each character goes through another arc, including the villain Loki (who is at his best here IMO) that adds to their character. Perhaps the weakest of the returning characters is Bruce Banner. I think I preferred Norton’s acting, but I like this version of the Hulk better visually. I will say, Ruffalo is not bad. I think the hatred for him stems with terrible writing decisions later on, because he plays the role competently in this and Avengers 2.

Coulson’s arc throughout the movies was also brilliant, you really get to like him, and he’s even more likeable here. His One-Shot appearance and appearances throughout the movie also portray him as a morally good man as an agent of SHIELD, which makes his sacrifice mean a lot more. It’s an arguably better reason for the team name; in the comics the Wasp just randomly chooses the name. But here, they are avenging Coulson’s death. Clark Gregg really had a great role here, he’s underrated as heck and was really the big piece that made this all work. My only qualm, is that he should have stayed dead.

Now this isn’t the deepest movie, don’t get me wrong. I am not intellectually challenged by the heroes coming to fight some aliens. But thankfully they remembered this was a good summer blockbuster and stuck to it. That’s all it needed to be!

As for actual flaws: aforementioned shaky cam is something I don’t like. Sometimes there’s too many cuts in the fights so I don’t get to appreciate the choreography. I also don’t understand why Black Widow didn’t focus on trying to shut down the portal sooner considering she’s more of the sneaky type. There’s also an annoying little music crescendo that rises whenever a tense situation happens, which gets old fast. (I’m not educated in music so I don’t know the actual term.)

That’s the end of Phase 1. Extremely strong start. This was one of the most hype moments of my childhood. I’d say in the first phase this is my third favorite, but frankly I would rate it better than my actual favorites because I struggle to find much wrong, when viewing, with this movie. Most of the stuff I dislike are nitpicks.

They finally found their footing here. So where did it go wrong after? I’ll have to see…

4.5/5 Stars is what I’ll rate it. It’s a near-perfect blockbuster.
