I didn’t see many movies this year

Still need to see TFA but these are the films I enjoyed

Favorite Movies-
Mad Max- Fury Road:
Of all the action movies I’ve seen so far this year, this film was one of the best. It’s one of the best action movies I’ve seen this decade, what with how intense and raw the action felt that made it all the more enjoyable. The choreography was also well done, offering some great wide angle shots that not only gave us a larger scale of the action, but made the general helming of the fight scenes a lot more satisfying. However, I also liked how much emotion this film had, especially with the way Furiosa’s backstory is handled and the problems Max learns of when interacting with her, adding a lot of heart to the film that really draws us into the characters. Then there are the performances which are really well done, Tom Hardy doing an excellent job portraying Max and Hugh Keays- Byrne giving a well executed performance of a threatening villain and worthy opponent of Max.

Jurassic World-
Of all the Jurassic Park films (even though I’ve only seen the original and this one), this one is second best to the original. The action was intense and there was alot of creative usage of the dinosaurs when they attacked the park, particularly the scene with the Pterosaurs where they go crazy with picking the humans up, tossing them around, even having them being eaten by that Pliosaur. The final fight scene was another highlight of this movie that made it more the worth seeing because, well, ITS A TREX FIGHTING ANOTHER GIANT DINOSAUR! HOW COOL IS THAT?!. Another thing I loved about this film is that the park looked visually astounding, what with the amount of detail put into it that makes it look like an actual theme park one could visit. I also though the acting was great, particularly Chris Pratt’s performance. I guess the areas which really prevent it from being a great movie were that their wasn’t a solid chemistry between Owen and Claire, as the two never really share any strong interactions with one another to flesh out their relationship. Though the next flaw that really hurt this movie, also mentioned by Nostalgia Critic, is that the build up to Indominus Rex was so anti climatic what with how generic it turned out to be, just a raptor on steroids. To think of the possibilities they had when designing such a creature, only to just rehash.

American Sniper-
I heard a lot of people talking left and right about this film when it was released, so I decided to give it a try, and while it’s not the best film of 2015, it’s still pretty darn good. Clint Eastwood makes for a great director, able to tell a war story fairly effectively, though the main protagonist portrayed by Bradley Cooper is what really sends this movie home. He does an excellent job at handling a withdrawn and somber performance, really helping to add more of a heart pounding and suspenseful nature to the film, though also being able to demonstrate the effects of PTSD that the film tries to tackle. I guess my main problem with the film would be that the other characters didn’t really stick out to me.

The Martian- Like American Sniper, I heard a lot of people talking about this film, and, like American Sniper, I enjoyed the heck out of it. The absolute pinnacle of this film was the amount of spirit, the writing and sense of humor are well done here and presented greatly by Matt Daemon’s character. Speaking of which, I love how they handled Matt Daemon’s character and the way he is able to find the good out of any struggle. Even the other characters manage to show this greatly, such as the people at NASA who are scrambling through meeting deadlines on constructing the rocket they need to rescue him, though still manage to find some humor out of these situations. Aside from its humor the film also has some fantastic, weighted suspense and there are moments when you expect the character is going to break but his optimism keeps him going. The other actors in the film performed excellently and I really can’t find any notable flaws with the film.

Decent Movies-
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2-
The last film in The Hunger Games series and an alright closure to be more precise. The slow pace of the movie did work at times here, much better than in part 1 IMO, really giving us a strong emotional feel and allowing us to see the struggles the characters go through as they fight against the Capitol. The acting itself was pretty good, Jennifer Laurence immediately springing to mind by doing a terrific job with her more subdued portrayal of Katniss here, definitely fitting the overall tone of the film. I did feel that the film lacked a lot of energy however and kinda dragged on at times where I’d wish something would happen, though that’s my only flaw here.

Antman-
Despite being a relatively small scaled film when compared to Marvel’s other films, I thought it was fitting, what with it following the story of a small scaled superhero. Aside from the scale fitting perfectly, the acting was great and very believable, particularly Michael Douglas who pulled of an incredible performance, Paul Lang did excellent as Ant Man, Michael Pena was hilarious, and Corey Stull has a lot of energy in his performance. The characters themselves were fairly interesting too, I though the relationship between Pym and his daughter had alot of depth, as did Antman’s character. While the villain did feel rather stereotypical, I liked that they gave him somewhat of an interesting backstory and connection to Pym. My main problems with the film were that the daughter and and ex wife of Ant Man felt like walking plot devices, though mainly that the film had somewhat of an odd structure, as it did feel like you were watching multiple films at once, rather that a solid and fluent piece.

Furious 7-
For an action movie, this one was fairly decent. Although I had never seen the other six films in the series, for a first time around, I had a fun time. The action and stunts performed were intense and there was a real feel of adrenaline during the chase scenes, though the combat scenes were a little messy considering the camera was so close up that it made things a little hard to see. As for the characters, they were fun and had a lot of energy to them that suited the pace of the film, even Jason Statham did a good job portraying the villain of this movie. However, despite his performance, the villain seems to be double edged sword since he is so underplayed in this film, only showing up several times.
Avengers: Age of Ultron-
The real shining point of this film was definitely how well constructed the characters were. While the first Avengers served as a nice introduction for all them, this one really upped the par with the depth of the characters and the chemistry between each of them. There was also some fantastic and witty writing that further added to making the characters alot more interesting and fun to watch. The main villain Ultron was a great villain too, as his motive was fairly clear and added to the suspense when our heroes clashed with him, though also because of how threatening his portrayal was here. The fight scenes themselves were another golden aspect of this film, offering some breath taking and intense wide angle shots of destruction and chaos being caused. However, the movie felt severely held down by many things which didn’t need to be there that could have been filled in for areas which deserved more attention, mainly the whole Hulk and Black Widow subplot that should have just been dropped since it really didn’t have a purpose. By cutting this, there would have been more room to maybe flesh out more of why Ultron grew to dislike humanity, make the relationship between Hawkeye and his wife more interesting, and even to add more to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witches personalities, as they felt very generic. In the end though, while the film isn’t an absolute trainwreck and I thought it was pretty enjoyable, there was some wasted opportunity with this film that could have been touched upon.

Spectre was definitely one of my favorites.

Ant-Man was good…I’ve seen better, though. I enjoyed it, but it’s not a favorite for me.

Mockingjay Part 2 was really good.

Haven’t seen The Force Awakens yet, but when I do I’m sure it will be a new favorite!
