Bricklink is good for specific parts and if you are not willing to buy numerous sets for specific pieces.
Ebay is good if you find a cheap deal on something
Buying current sets (locally or internationally) is the way to start if you want a specific collection since normally its cheaper than most you would find on Bricklink,and if its not used its way cheaper than anything from Ebay.
Always look up local areas and sites if you can find cheap deals, it helps.
