Some of Mystery Muffin’s Mocs offer a good starting point, I like their style as-is but with a little exaggeration it might tick the box for you want. Bricks, including curved part such as part 11477 or 50950 around the edges would be a must-have. Also, the likes of Eero Okkonen on Flickr may be helpful.
I don’t endorse animu mocs but hopefully my two cents are helpful in terms of building system faces.
