The question is, since this wasn’t the best received year set-wise and was almost as controversial as 2005…which 2008 Toa Nuva and 2008 Makuta should I get?
And another reason I’m asking this is because the 2008 line wasn’t clone sets and 2008 was the year I lost interest in Bionicle and stopped collecting the sets.
And there is no rush for me to get them because I’ll take time and think about people’s recommendations here deeply.
If you’re looking for parts I would recommend Pohatu Phantoka. His mask is a half mask, his torso has detachable shoulders, and his propellers have those sweet housing pieces.
On the villain side I would recommend Makuta Antroz. He has those neat wings, blades, and Piraka leg pieces in black.
For a Toa I recommend Onua! He’s got a great mask, nice colors and some unique features like the shoulder shield. The blaster add-on is cool.
From the Makuta sets, Krika looks amazing and very menacing. I feel like Bitil also often gets overlooked, he has a striking appearance and really sells the mutated bug vibe.
And of course there’s Lego Bionicle set number 8947 Radiak released in 2008 containing 16 pieces.
Krika is the most visually striking Makuta set in my opinion, and Lewa probably fills that role for the Toa. He’s a bit thin, but the rocket shoulder design and mask feel very natural for him
I’d recommend Antroz or Vamprah for the Makuta. As mentioned above, Antroz has some sweet wings and blades. Vamprah is a cool spin on the basic Makuta design and I enjoy his folding wings.
For Toa, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the Phantoka. Lewa and Pohatu are particularly memorable, though of course Lewa’s lime limbs are susceptible to breakages. I also think Onua is a solid set with a cool mask and unique housing piece for his Nynrah Ghost Blaster.
I do think Tridax Pods and Midak Skyblasters are superior launchers/playables than Nynrah Ghost Blasters, though.
They are, but just as much as any other color socket from 2008 onwards. The lime plastic issue limits itself to only 2007, lime parts from 2008 are just as strong as others - from my experience at least.
They’re obviously still quite fragile, but that’s due to the mold rather than the plastic color.
Good point. I’ve personally experienced more breakages with my Lewa than any of my other 2008 canister sets, but all 2008 BIONICLE plastic is pretty bad on that front.
I thought I’d make an update to this topic and say I decided to get Tahu Mistika used and retired in excellent condition with the manual and the pieces in a plastic bag.
The seller I bought from on eBay had high quality pics of him already built and a pic of all the complete pieces in a small plastic bag. I got him for less than $40 which I feel is a good deal. I’m hoping and am sure the seller with have the set unassembled when it’s shipped to me.
I’m kinda fond of Tahu Mistika particularly because of his design and build and also because of his famous cameo appearance in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Eh, compared to how I got previous canister sets and got one of the 2001-2003 Matoran, it wasn’t as pricey. I had a really hard time finding sets like Zaktan, Nuparu and Nokama in really good condition used for a decent price.
But, I have a good job and will regain back the money easily. By less than $40, I’m including the tax and shipping prices that I had to pay for him.
But maybe I could have gotten him a little cheaper. It’ll be alright though. I almost considered getting Takanuva 8699 and the same seller was selling him too under the same conditions for over $100, but I definitely knew he wasn’t worth that much (I don’t think any of the original Titan sets are worth spending that much money for).
