Many, many years ago, Illvyr lived a simple life. On the island of Cala Kofo, a small land in the south mostly populated by Fe- and Po-Matoran, he served as the resident sheriff. His comrades, the other Toa Cala, served in equally important roles. All was peaceful, until the Brotherhood decided that Toa of Iron were a threat to their very existence.

One member of the Toa Cala, a Toa of Magnetism, mysteriously disappeared one night. Illvyr was put on the case to figure out what happened to her. Try as he might, though, he couldn’t find anything conclusive. He found no body, no traces as to where she might have gone, nothing. After his third search, he was about ready to give up when he got a message from Cala Kofo’s Turaga. Apparently, the other two Toa Cala had vanished, and a tablet had appeared at the Turaga’s doorstep with an ultimatum. Illvyr was to travel to a location on a nearby island and surrender himself, and in exchange the other two Toa would be freed. Illvyr went, though he had no intention of giving himself up.

On that island, Illvyr found a Dark Hunter outpost. There, he found his comrades, both in stasis tubes. Much to his surprise, his missing sister was there too, and had seemingly gone mad. She had kidnapped the other two Toa Cala and instructed Illvyr to trade his life for theirs. Illvyr refused, and a fight ensued. Interestingly, the mad Toa never once used her elemental powers in the battle. She did, however, talk a lot. She explained that the Dark Hunters were being paid to assassinate Toa of Iron and Magnetism, and so she joined them to make sure she wouldn’t be among those killed. Illvyr started winning the fight and backed his sister into a corner. That, he realized, was a mistake. The form of the Fa-Toa shifted into that of the Dark Hunter Triglax. Triglax then went on the offensive and turned the tables of the fight. Illvyr knew he couldn’t win, so instead he used his power to free the other two Toa and escape. While they were fleeing, Triglax killed the Toa of Fire.

Illvyr and the other remaining Toa Cala, a Toa of Ice named Gallou, managed to return to Cala Kofo. They both knew they couldn’t stay there, though, as it put the island at risk for invasion by the Dark Hunters. Thus, they went into hiding. The two Toa sailed far from their home until they reached the southernmost piece of land in the entire Matoran Universe. It was pretty desolate, and was inhabited by a race of four-armed giants, but the two Toa were able to scrape out a life there. Illvyr even went so far as to change his armor so he looked less like a Toa of Iron.

With the Reformation came the functional death of the Dark Hunters. Most of their forces were killed or captured over the course of the Destiny War & Reign of Shadows, they’d lost a good amount of their treasure, and the Hunters’ Guild stole most of their clients. With the organization in such a sorry state, Illvyr and Gallou saw fit to rejoin society. The two Toa served as guardians of a small Matoran-Agori village a little ways south of New Atero and west of Roxus. There, all was well… until all was not well.

Gallou disappeared one night, around fifteen years after the Reformation. Illvyr, dreading a repeat of the incident with Triglax, immediately started tracking him down. For good measure, he also placed a bounty on Gallou’s head. Not to kill him, but just to find him. Maybe a week later, he traced his brother’s whereabouts to a small, stone warehouse in the middle of the Roxtus Desert. There was nothing but desert around for kios and kios, serving to hide the building quite well. Not quite well enough for Illvyr, though. As he approached the site, he was met by a robotic bounty hunter from the Guild. Together, Illvyr and Mecn broke into the warehouse. It was dark and cramped inside, and Mecn could barely fit. Neither of them noticed a twisted and disfigured Toa of Stone creeping up behind them until it was too late.

Illvyr awoke to find himself strapped to a table. Next to him was the body of Gallou, swollen and bloated in strange places. It was then he met the man responsible: a Toa of Ice called Doctor Vikto, who hailed from a dimension where Toa ruled supreme. Vikto had come in search of new test subjects, and Illvyr was more than suitable. Illvyr, his mind still groggy and clouded, couldn’t protest as Vikto injected him with a powerful nanite-laced concoction. The serum jolted through his veins, and the Toa’s body began to convulse and expand. Nanites merged with tissue and metal alike. The process lasted for maybe a minute. One minute of pure, excruciating agony the likes of which Illvyr had never felt before. When at last his body stopped changing, his mind slipped into peaceful darkness and his heartlight faded.

Around half a minute later, it kicked back in, and the Toa bolted to his feet, easily snapping the restraints that had held him. He was… different. Very, very different. He stood a few heads taller than he had before, and his body was far wider and unbelievably burly. Strength coursed through his new muscles, and with both physical and emotional pain still fresh in his mind, Illvyr was ready to try them out. Unfortunately, he was quite clumsy with his new body. Vikto managed to escape, but at least Illvyr caught Vikto’s Po-Toa lab assistant.

Ever since that incident, Illvyr decided on two things. One: he was never going to get close to anyone ever again; and two: he was moving to a smaller, quieter town. Even though the Order of Mata Nui, the Hunters’ Guild, and the local governments of New Atero, New Metru Nui, and Tuarua Nui would all be more than eager to have Illvyr join them, he instead settled in a quiet town called Podira located in the Great Barren. He’s enjoyed a mostly peaceful life there, where the only threats he has to deal with are Skopio and Bone Hunters. Of course, he’s occasionally roped in by the Order to deal with massive threats, but those are few and far between.
