Kongu Mahri's Weaponry (Or Lack Thereof)

… unless he propels himself into some kind of flying kick

He would fire air from his Cordak blasters. Those launchers can channel elemental energy. What @Lesnichiy is proposing is 100% correct - that is canon, not just a game thing.

Also keep in mind being a Toa of Air in the environment where every enemy is water-breather, means you are essentially a Toa of Poison.

And Kongu himself is a water-breather, so he has to be extra careful about using his air powers.

That would be sweet.

I’m wondering: so at some point, Greg mentioned that the Cordak Blaster rockets were not powerful enough to kill, but would instead stun enemies. So are the Toa just avoiding directly shooting enemies, or are they using a type of ammo different from Hydraxon’s usual ones?

Come to think of it, on a similar note, I have always felt Kongu had gotten the short end of the stick as an Inika and a Mahri

For instance as an Inika the only time he got to show any cool moves like the cyclone, it ended up destroying a bridge, he didn’t get the mask of flight, or anything flight-related, and his personality change was a far cry from even his courageous Matoran self, “would screaming and running count? That would be a good plan right now”. Really? Compare this to his Bohrok animation self. I wouldn’t be against a sense of humor, but this was kind of a derail.

And his Zatth, didn’t do much beneficial.

And then after Mahri Nui, he has no visible or noticeable weapon compared to the others.
It was sad because I was enjoying Kongu even when I was a kid.

This is exactly why Kongu Mahri is my (hot take incoming) favorite. As a kid, I always thought big gun=cool and Kongu has two.

Dude taught me to dream big before I even knew how.

My thought process when I was younger as well. Everyone else just gets one gun and Kongu gets two, that’s awesome

I think he would physically beat down rahi with his Cordak Blasters.

Kongu Mahri being jacked was 100% intentional by the Ignika. The various Mahri guidebooks say stuff like this:

The energy of the Mask of Life transformed the skillful and agile Toa of Air into a powerful warrior with a massive build.

WEAPON
Two rotating Cordak blasters, perfectly complementing Kongu’s tank-like silhouette.

The Mask of life was literally making body-builders under the ocean :smirk:

Hold the phone, there are Mahri guidebooks?!?

Europe exclusive yes. Ameet, a polish publishing house, made many BIONICLE activity books, but only few of them have been translated into english - most notably Mata Nui’s guide to Bara Magna and Makuta’s guide to the universe. That and the four books relating the 2008 story, but those were only released in UK in english, so still europe exclusive.

You can find some of them here and actually I am in the process of collecting the missing ones and translating them over here, along with other forgotten BIONICLE books/written material.

The Ameet books are a very interesting read, they contain lots of info people outside of european countries were not privy to, so I recommend checking it out :slightly_smiling_face:

Wow there is a LOT of interesting trivia there, I had no idea Voya Nui had a lighthouse :stuck_out_tongue:
Are these considered canon? Things like Ehlek needing to absorb energy stones to generate his lightning (something that was shown in the Barraki commercial)
(Sorry for getting off topic)

Yes of course, they are official LEGO licensed publications. Indeed, a lot of worldbuilding details are in these books and one can often source them to the story bibles/style guides for the year. Many things start to make so much more sense about the world.
Btw the lighthouse is in VNOG where you start the game.

But to get back to topic, I think the original question should be extended to all the Toa Mahri. In Legends 7 on page 19 the narrator says:

Kongu looked down at himself. His armor was different, his weapons were gone, and he could feel a pair of tubes running from his back to the front of his mask.

and on page 22, Jaller comments:

This is bad. Our weapons gone, our masks have changed powers - and if we don’t get a handle on what we can do now, we’re going to be fish food.

This seems to strongly imply that the weapons of the Toa Inika didn’t transform into those of Toa Mahri, but were instead lost completely. The info about Kongu’s discarded close range weapon comes only from Greg quotes, but it seems to contradict the books he wrote.
It isn’t that simple though… where did Mahri then get their new tools? We know how they find Cordak, but what about their melee? Right after their transformation, Hahli and Matoro are described releasing their power from their hands (no tools), but in later chapters the tools just appear out of nowhere:

You have fins. They look kind of like wings. And a big claw.

This may imply that Mahri’s tools are more natural, which is in line with the theme of 2007, and thus did not initially view them as weapons, but this explanation fails for characters like Hewkii or Jaller.

The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the transformation was still ongoing and these tools appeared later on their own.

PS: Sadly, none of the EU activity books contains any explanatory information on this either.

In one of the 2007 commercials, you can see Matoro twitch his claw as though the blades are his fingers, rather than a gauntlet. Makes sense if they’re actually part of his body!

Good point! I wonder if this another case of grafted “gloves” or “knuckles”, which were pretty much the explanations behind Onua’s and Nuparu’s claws…
