Kourani (My entry for DuckBricks’ Fanon Contest)

Kourani

All Matoran with even the slightest interest in fauna will agree on one thing, there is no other species with such unique personality as the Kourani. These lobster-like Rahi, living at the bottom of natural reservoirs, became familiar with the Matoran race to such an extent that many of them left the lakes and decided to live on the surface. This is due to the fact that the herbivorous Kourani eat any plant or fruit that exists on the planet, and their appetite is unrivaled. Once they realized that they were endearing themselves to the Matoran, many of the creatures began to make regular visits to the villages near the water, hoping to be fed there. As a result, many of them became pets for the Matoran.

Contrary to what is said about Rahi living in cold water, Kourani like warm, so if a fire is lit near their place, there is a good chance that at least one individual will come to warm up.

Although they move slowly on their short legs, Kourani are able to instantly turn their backs on a potential opponent, exposing them to the sting on their tail, which secretes a substance that causes muscle numbness. Thanks to this defense mechanism, they quickly adapted to life on land, where they encountered a new range of predators. And predators, over time learned not to hunt creatures hiding under a hard yellow shell, which, despite their small size, can easily outsmart the attacker.

Kourani also have extremely sensitive hearing, which often exposes them to stress. Therefore, the more noisy Matoran mistakenly believe that these creatures are timid.

The recent events that led to the destruction of the Matoran Universe and the mass migration of its inhabitants have caused the Kourani to re-wild and return to life underwater, although tame individuals can still be encountered that will approach to steal some fruitsfrom the baskets.
