Lariska (Knife-Throwing, Knife-Stabbing Action!)(Old Version)

Finally finished my Dark Hunter Lariska! For maximum lore-compatibility, she’s decked in dark turquoise pieces, has an exposed brainstem piece, a mechanical arm (with dual action feature!), and holds two different kinds of knives on her torso.

Aesthetically I had a very specific idea of where I wanted to go with her: about halfway between ninja assassin and Fallout Assaultron.

Her prosthetic hand features two pin slots: a 3/4 pin to grip the stabbing knives (the ones with the flick missile base, which can also be slotted into her remaining hand), and the exposed 1/2 light grey pin for the throwing knives.

The 1/2 pin holds minifig utensils/weapon pieces, but very loosely, which is an ideal seat for the knife launching mechanism. I haven’t figured out how to post video, so to see how the action feature functions check out the two videos on the Flickr album.

The action feature was built around an official LEGO band (I believe it’s the Red Rubber Belt Medium (Round Cross Section) - Approx. 3 x 3), but I also wanted it to be compatible with more easily replaceable non-LEGO bands. The Wal-Mart brand black ones I have are a little stronger, and allow her to throw knives a little harder.

The signal paddle piece is her elbow, and stops the forearm from over-rotating.

Obviously I had to use the lovely ratcheting Technic Rotation Joint in the prosthetic, both as a secure base for the mechanism and to help differentiate what is basically already a robot (yes I know they’re not 100% robots, leave me alone) from her more primitive, aftermarket addition. To add to that contrast I also gave her fingers on her remaining hand.

I love the greebling on the mata brainstalk, and I don’t think I’ve seen anybody use it in this orientation before. It’s more abstract and inhuman than a standard face would be, and gives off strong killbot energy. Since she apparently refuses to wear a mask - and because masks are (paradoxically) a strong tie to personal identity in the Matoran Universe - I decided to go in the opposite direction and lean into her inhumanity. I see her more as a knife nut (she’s actually listed in the examples, even) that a femme fatale.

I wanted a completely unique build that retained that classic simple Technic/early BIONICLE aesthetic - something that gives off that ‘official set’ look - and while I do cheat a lot using newer Technic pieces, I’m very satisfied with the final look.

I’ve not seen the hand build anywhere else, I think? It holds bar and axle sized items cleanly, but the thumb needs to be readjusted for items thicker than an axle (like your standard molded weapon pieces).

Yeah, those are Tarakava shock absorbers (she’s got a lot of Tarakava in her). I’m… fairly certain that they’re connected legally. Shock absorbers are kind of a weird length.

The turning gear on her upper back doesn’t do anything, but it’s cool, importantly. Like the punk version of a turning gear.

Poised to throw a knife. The tan gear acts as the trigger.

The gaps between her remaining limbs and torso are cushioned with the wheels that came from Technic Race Plane 42117 (a great source of Dark Turquoise pieces). Their orientation is intentional, the sides seem (?) to be asymmetrical.

“Knife to meet you.”
- Lariska, probably

Her legs have a wide range of motion, not all of it stable, but when balanced she can do some pretty decent stride poses. Towballs are surprisingly strong.

This took such a long time to figure out how to do cleanly, but here it is: using this tan gear as the trigger changes the way the rubber band is mounted, pulling it to the sides a bit and preventing the band from slipping into the gap between the liftarms and the grey forearm gear. This was such an issue with these stronger, thinner black rubber bands, and it jammed up the action feature something awful, but with this construction it prevents it from happening basically at all.

Forward running render.

The throwing knives had to be imported from Mecabricks into Stud.IO, and the bandolier had to be exported out to Blender and manually bent before being put back into Stud.IO.

Taking aim render.

Throwing knife render.

Lunging render.

This looks so wonderfully old school, fantastic job. The function is really interesting too.

Nice lariska! Idk if it’s what I had in mind, but cool none the less it’s a great design, and the function is fabulous. I think my main issue with it is that it’s a bit clunky looking, and I imagined lariska as looking more agile. I think that head design would be perfect for a Marendar moc. Anyway, this is still undeniably cool, great work!

i liek the head design, makes a change
from vortixx-like lariskas.

My biggest concern is the side light looking ominously like Krekka’s singular eye, an that may be a distinction you would want to avoid. The head also lacks any discernable features, and while that is a unique aesthetic, many other future entries for the contest have received attention due to their similarity to existing MU beings, so it may be worth while to find a way to add the typical angular eyes to your design.

Otherwise this is possibly the best entry for the Lariska contest we’ve seen yet. Obviously the piston system for the legs is a strong addition here, but the biggest has to be the actual mechanism for the left arm, which puts this at a league above all the other preemptive entries for the contest. Other aspects fall a bit on the simplistic side, but otherwise this Lariska is wonderful. You’ve got time to make improvements to the rest of the design in the meantime, and I highly anticipate this to be a very strong contender in the final rounds.

actually, it a 5/8 pin

Thanks for the commentary and compliments! Yeah, the scope is an intentional reference to Krekka’s. The Krekka set has a lot of self-modding and I really like that somewhat under-discussed aspect of the dark hunters culture. And although it doesn’t come off as clearly in pictures, the greebling on the Mata brainstalk is really visually striking and gives off strong killbot energy (think Shockwave, the Assaultrons, Mecha Sonic, the E.M.M.I., GladOS, etc). There’s something specific about mono-eyes that screams cold, relentless killing machine to me - even if I didn’t want to use the piece I’d still want her to have a round cyclops eye.

Wow, that’s awesome. I really like the torso and the lower legs especially. The head design is interesting. And the action feature is fantastic!

Mother of Violence indeed.

That is literally the best justification for Krekka’s bizarre appearance I have ever heard.

Hm, you know when I first saw this on the Bionicle subreddit, I was a bit skeptical of the head design, but this explanation is actually really good.

In terms of things not related to stuff you’ve said already. I’ve got to say that this has done a great job of capturing that rough, mechanical(well more mechanical than Bionicle’s already are) aesthetic that pretty much characterized most of the Dark Hunters. Also I can appreciate how this isn’t so loaded up with teal as to make replicating it super expensive.

A lot of the hunters mentioned in the guidebook are asymmetrical and unlike anything else in the MU. They’re all arrived-at monstrous forms. The book rationalizes these builds as being the result of mutation, bodily dismemberment, or self-modding, but this also applies to some of the official characters too: Lariska, Krekka, Zaktan, Nidhiki, Sentrakh, Voporak, etc.

Yeah I knew I had to keep the turquoise pieces relatively understated for that exact reason, though some recent system sets have started including the color again, which was handy. The biggest hurdle for recreation is gonna be getting that kakama, which already isn’t cheap. I was lucky enough to have got a tarakava for a good deal on eBay.

I don’t know if I can see her as Lariska, but is still a wonderful MOC by itself. Actually, that’s the best mechanical arm I’ve seen in any Lariska. If not the best representation of the character, it’s truly the most fun.

Carefully blocked out the support beam (it’s shot from above) for a free jumping pose.

I think it’s the law that any given Lariska MOC must be able to handstand?

And a deconstruction shot.

Wow! This moc does everything mine does but better, I’m almost considering not entering the contest because I just can’t compete with this. Can’t say I’m completely on-board with the head design, but it’s certainly unique, plus everything else is spot-on.
