I have to admit, I can kind of see their point, but only for this specific contest.
This vote isn’t just about Lego doing something nice for the fans: it’s about celebrating Lego as a whole. And as good as Bionicle is, and as much as it helped the company in the early 2000s, it isn’t what I think of when I hear “Lego”. Lego is famous for System. Even if a hypothetical winning Bionicle model was built using System, it would still be in celebration of a non-System theme.
Which is why I can understand, just for this contest, why non-Bionicle fans might be salty.
(Honestly though, a lot of the themes in there seem just as niche as Bionicle. The only ones that stood out to me as Classic Lego were the lines from the 80’s, like Classic Space.)
Of course, that being said, Lego gave us the option to vote Bionicle, so you can bet your butt that I’m voting for Bionicle.

So what I’m taking from this conversation:
Lego threw us a bone. If we take it, we will summon the hate of the entire AFOL community upon us. If we don’t, Lego 'll just say “Well, you had your chance”.
We can’t really win this game, can we?

I think this is kind of what it is: a symbolic gesture. Given that the second round votes aren’t public, I suspect that the final votes are just to gauge public opinion, rather than to blindly make a set of the one with the most votes.
Which is completely fair, by the way. Online contests have a way of being brigaded, so Lego is leaving themselves some wiggle room to veto a winner. (Apparently there was controversy with a Star Wars vote a few years ago?)
Of course, a more cynical person than myself might say that Lego made this rule specifically to shield themselves from having to make a Bionicle set, and they just threw the name in there to make us happy.

This is what I’ve been predicting from the start. Either Bionicle or Adventurers will sweep, then get flattened by Castle or Space in round 2.
A few years ago? Star Wars gets brigaded every time it’s an option on a lego poll.

So just because there are some people who dislike Bionicle, that means you as a Bionicle fan will not support it. What kind of mentality is this? 
EDIT: I see now doesn’t discourage Axelford.
If the answer was clear, they wouldn’t have included Bionicle in the first place.

Yeah, I guess so. Just seems a little odd since town is usually pretty good with not having things that couldn’t happen in real life.
