Since there’s been a bunch of new train sets released recently, I figured we should have a place to discuss Lego trains in general! Share your collections, thoughts, layouts, ideas etc…
I just decided to unpack mine and build a layout, which I hadn’t done in quite a while. I forgot how much space this takes up because of the wide curves.
These were some of my favorite playthings growing up. I was a big fan of trains in general, and the Lego train system was easily among the best to me (only rivalled by Plarail).
Those two passenger trains were always my favorites, I liked how they complement each other as a regional train and an intercity express. Both probably have an abhorrent amount of runtime, but they still work perfectly! I only seem to have lost the lightbulb for the ICE’s headlights.
Over the years I’ve made a lot of train MOCs, the most notable of which was an Intelli train powered by Lego Boost. Using the color sensor, it could read colored tiles on the track and respond appropriately. At one point I also used parts from the Jack Stone plane to make a white and orange passenger train, which looked quite neat. Can’t find their photos right now, but if I do, I can post them here.
This is probably the only train set I’ve cared about maybe ever just because it looks like tremendous fun with the zipline going between the two sides of the track. It reminds me a lot of older sets from my era that actually used the full space of the set.
I believe this holiday train was the first train set we got, though I honestly don’t recall the order in which we got the two trains. Either way, the holiday train is the only one still intact because my mother liked to have it out and running around Christmas. Very fun train, though my brothers always liked to speed it up too much and send it flying off the rails (I always had to rebuild it).
This cargo train was another fun set. My parents got it for my brothers and me out of the blue one day and we each built a few parts of it at the same time (it had separate instructions for each component). I remember when we were younger, we set this up on the coffee table and built a whole city around it including skyscrapers with working elevators. Great fun and great memories.
Honestly, the leaked “Police Train Heist” set for January sounds kind of interesting. As far as I know, no details about what the set actually consists of have been revealed, but I am very curious.
Sadly, the only ones I have are some of the small Creator 3-in-1 trains and Christmas polybag ones…And all of them were scrapped for parts at the moment. My Mom almost bought me a proper Lego train several times over the years but stopped every time because she could have sworn she bought me or my siblings a train one before. One of these days I’ll get my hands on one.
Though lost to time, one of my earliest (and frequently reattempted) builds in LDD was a train engine and tank hybrid. They were always super basic and I had no idea how the train parts worked. One of these days I should return to it and build what kid me never could. But I also really aspire to do something like this one day:
