In the dark history of the Toa empire, Lhikan was simply recorded as a victim, the first to die in the darkhunter war that led to Tuyet’s rise to power. However, the truth was far more sinister.
After she and Nidhiki defeated their former leader, Tuyet captured Lhikan. The Toa mangai was tortured in an attempt to forcefully indoctrinate him to see things from Tuyets perspective. But Lhikans mind would not break.
So, Tuyet did something unprecedented. Capturing the makuta Krika, she gave him an ultimatum. Test his shadow powers on Lhikan or be slain as a traitor. Reluctantly, Krika drained all of the light from Toa Lhikan, the process of which also wiped the heroes memory. What was left was the first recorded Toa of Shadow.
Taking his hau as a trophy, Tuyet equipped the shadow Toa with a ruru so that he could hunt in the night, slaying any that the empress deemed to be a threat.
Loyal in his duty, yet ruthless in his action, he soon became a whisper among the fearful matoran. They had better work hard, lest “the night-haunter” or “the shadow of Tuyet” make an example of them.
In truth though, some semblance of Lhikan still resides in the shadow Toa. He will not under any circumstance harm a Matoran. This disobedience is quickly followed my punishment via the nui stone.
These shreds of his past self amuse Tuyet, who calls him into her chamber for private conversation. Despite his seeming loyalty to the empire, the shadow is reluctant to speak unless spoken to, especially by the empress herself.
One day, after a few years of successful missions, Tuyet decided to play a nasty trick of fate. She had Lhikans original Hau reforged into a Kraahkan shape.
The poor shadow Lhikan could not understand this cruel irony. Tuyets gift only served to symbolize her dominance over both him and the brotherhood of Makuta she was soon to crush, her own mask reforged into the shape of the Avohkii they hated and feared so.
Lhikan is but a shadow of himself under the empire of Toa, the only link to his past being the swords he now uses to kill Tuyets enemies. It would take a miracle to revive the old legend, but perhaps there is hope from a visitor who hails from a different dimension entirely…
