Long, long ago, Girin was a rather lowly Makuta. Unlike most of the Brotherhood at the time, he embraced his more sadistic tendencies, and as such was not well-respected by his peers. While the other Makuta were making Rahi and studying the world, Girin was keeping the Brotherhood’s fortress tidy. Mutran started calling him the Janitor of Destral, a nickname that quickly spread (much to Girin’s chagrin).

Angry and spiteful, Girin searched for any way to improve his standing. He wasn’t a very good scientist, nor was he an exceptional fighter or leader, but he was clever and charismatic. In his spare time, he read, since there wasn’t much more he was able to do. As the Janitor, he had access to almost every nook and cranny on Destral, and so he could study from powerful Brotherhood tomes restricted to others. As he studied them, searching for ways to increase his power, he came across a book detailing the Underplane.

Girin began experimenting with rituals, trying to send himself to the Underplane. On one fateful morning (only a few weeks before Teridax’s Convocation), he actually succeeded. The lowly Makuta’s body, mind, and soul was transported to the Underrealm. It was a strange place, with ground made of red clouds and floating islands dotting the sky. There, Girin met a dark being by the name of Mataku, the Under King. Ever the smooth-talker, Girin managed to persuade him to allow the Makuta to rule by his side. The two struck a deal: Girin would see to the souls and nightmares of the Protonians (GSR organisms) while Mataku would do the same for Magnans (natives of Bara/Bota Magna). Together, the two Under Kings ruled for many thousands of years, neither liking the other. Mataku had a disdain for Girin’s sadism and Girin loathed Mataku’s lack of flair. This rivalry would come to a head a few years after the Reformation, when Girin betrayed Mataku and threw him down into the Beneath. Henceforth, there has only ever been a single Under King.

Giriin wears a shapeshifted Kanohi Grimm, the Mask of Nightmares. It is similar to the Olisi, but more comprehensive in its abilities. Using it, Giriin can instill deeply terrifying nightmares in any sleeping individual, and can manipulate those nightmares however he wishes. The mask pairs very nicely with his mastery over the Sleep and Fear Kraata powers.

Species: Makuta Familiar
Element: None
Kanohi: None
Weapon(s): Stav Phoba
Abilities: Moderate control over Fear, Sleep, and Teleportation; Dealmaking; Reality-warping
Affiliation(s): Makuta Girin

Burum is a Familiar, a being created from Antidermis with only a fraction of the power of a true Makuta. Unlike most Familiars, though, Burum was not created strictly from Antidermis. His essence is intertwined with the Underplane itself, preventing him from ever leaving it but granting him additional powers. The Underplane is linked to him forever, and he will exist as long as it does. Due to this, he can venture into the Beneath and return safely.

While Girin’s affairs were largely linked to the living plane, Burum has been loyally tending to the Underplane and its “inhabitants”. This includes seeing to deals and soul contracts. Girin can’t exactly be bothered to see to every mortal soul who wants more for themselves, so he delegates most deals to his Familiar. Burum doesn’t mind. He doesn’t really have much else to do. Ultimately, he’s just thankful that his predicament means he can’t be dragged into Girin’s mortal scuffles.

Yes indeed! He was one of my biggest inspirations with the moc, along with the Scarlet King from the SCP mythos and Alastor from Hazbin Hotel.
